2024 Draft - Cardinals pitchers.
Just checking the 4 pitchers the Cardinals drafted in their first 20 picks in 2024. Crav or others may have insight into deeper picks.
3. Brian Holiday (80) RHP R-R 5-11 203 Oklahoma State University Tampa, Fla.
On the IL for all of 2025 according to this report
https://www.cbssports.com/fantasy/baseb ... season-il/
5. Braden Davis (142) LHP L-L 5-11 175 University of Oklahoma Keller, Texas
Currently pitching at Palm Beach. A whole lot of strikeouts and walks but around a 2:1 ratio. Manageable ERA and WHIP if he can get the walks down.

7. Andrew Dutkanych IV (201) RHP R-R 6-3 230 Vanderbilt University Indianapolis, Ind.
Drafted while injured. TJ surgery. Still on the 60 Day IL.

8. Jack Findlay (231) LHP L-L 6-3 220 University of Notre Dame Ledgewood, N.J.
Another roll of the dice. Drafted while still injured after TJ surgery, but further along. Now pitching at Palm Beach with 2 true outcomes. Either a strikeout or a walk at close to the same rates. High ERA and WHIP as he works his way back.

Re: 2024 Draft - Cardinals pitchers.
My sense is that Findlay has been a bit better lately.
I was too lazy to do the actual digging, but that is my sense.

Davis can K a lot of people, and he can walk a lot of people. One of those needs to get better. Some promise there. Worth the watch. BP or Starter....depends on his control and long counts.RunSup wrote: ↑23 Jun 2025 16:02 pm Just checking the 4 pitchers the Cardinals drafted in their first 20 picks in 2024. No comment on the Vandy kid, he's still not healed. I expect him next season.
Findlay is now 26 months removed from TJ Surgery...he's been awful out of the BP for Palm Beach. I guess we should reserve judgement until next season? I want to revisit him after the ASB. Maybe they put him in the rotation by then. We gave him overslot to leave Notre Dame...I expected a bit more this far removed from TJS. Maybe he had a set back in his recovery last year? I don't know. I hope we didn't
Brian Holiday...injured in Spring Training, done for the season.

You may have guessed, outside of JJ. Wetherholt, I really disliked this draft.
Re: 2024 Draft - Cardinals pitchers.
https://www.baseball-reference.com/regi ... &year=2025
He has been better in June. Mixed results.
- .739 OPS against in May. .583 OPS against in June.
- BABIP cut from .387 in May to .226 in June. He's either gotten luckier or softer hits against.
- But K's are down in June and pitching at even rate with walks (9-9)
- WHIP still at 1.455 in June. Even though ERA is down.

Multiple short contact hitters didn't do it for you?craviduce wrote: ↑23 Jun 2025 16:18 pm

I'm all for gambles when you do something at the top of the draft to pay for said gambles.....we didn't do that. We took JJ Wetherholt at Slot IIRC, maybe a few dollars more.RunSup wrote: ↑23 Jun 2025 18:11 pmMultiple short contact hitters didn't do it for you?craviduce wrote: ↑23 Jun 2025 16:18 pm

We reached on Campos and we reached on Holiday...to save enough money to pry Findlay from Notre Dame, and AK from Vandy, and Ortiz from going to a 4 year school from Juco. Holiday and Campos were our 3rd and 4th round picks....we could've had some really good picks in the 3rd and 4th rounds......Sirota, Hartle, the kid from Alabama, I can't remember his name, he went 3rd round.
I didn't like the game plan, and I didn't like the players. I'm fond of the Petrutz and Ortiz picks...and maybe Burns and Sparks...but they're all long shots. Ortiz with the best shot as of now.
There's a lot time for this to pan out...but I was severely disappointed how we used such a tight bonus budget last year.
Re: 2024 Draft - Cardinals pitchers.
Who is calling the shots for the Cardinals 2025 draft? I assume Bloom has ascended at its his call on draft strategy now.craviduce wrote: ↑23 Jun 2025 18:20 pmI'm all for gambles when you do something at the top of the draft to pay for said gambles.....we didn't do that. Re: 2024 Draft - Cardinals pitchers.
drafts are basically which scout(s) can yell the loudest. The Southwest (Texas, Oklahoma, Arizona) have had the loudest scouts the last 5 or 6 years. Followed closely by California. I feel we have a meek group of Southeast Scouts...they can't yell loud enough to get their players picked. That's what it seems like to me, our drafts usually get dominated by a region. Big 12 recently, California a few years ago. I'd love an SEC draft with ACC mixed in.RunSup wrote: ↑23 Jun 2025 18:25 pmWho is calling the shots for the Cardinals 2025 draft? Big 12 scouts made a lot of money last season

we do our best (best results) when we get pitchers from California
----------
Will Bloom have a say? Sure, but I didn't read anywhere that there was a new Scouting Director...I assume Flores is still in charge? Cerfolio is in charge of Development, I'm sure he'll be in the room....but I think it's still Flores show. Bloom more than likely gave direction and guidance.
Re: 2024 Draft - Cardinals pitchers.
I don’t get drafting pitchers who already have surgeries.
