3 teams Blues could trade down with at 2025 NHL Draft

The NHL offseason is fully underway with the Florida Panthers repeating as Stanley Cup champions, and now we're onto the 2025 NHL Draft. There is usually tons of activity surrounding the draft with teams looking to trade up, trade down, or take a big swing for a roster player. This year should be no different.

The St. Louis Blues may need to be in on the action if they want to optimize their current position. The Blues and general manager Doug Armstrong have just three picks in the upcoming 2025 NHL Draft: 19th overall in the first round and then not until St. Louis' own picks in the fifth and sixth rounds. That's it.

The Blues are in an interesting position, though, as they could look to trade down from pick No. 19 while getting a later first-round pick and more draft capital in return.

Here are three teams who could be trade partners for the Blues on Friday night.

Thanks for posting. I did enjoy the article. However, I don't see it, but that doesn't mean it couldn't happen. IMO, we need a player that has NHL certainty (as much as you can hope for) this year. I know we might be able to get a second or third round pick that we don't have currently in a trade. I know this was twenty years ago, but I've never gotten over trading down when we could have had Logan Couture and we ended up with Lars Eller. This is hindsight. I knew it at the time.

So the idea is trade quality for a bunch of chances at rubbish, yeah no thanks.

Setting aside all the analysis that this year is a uniquely bad time to trade down (since we happen to pick right around where a notable dropoff in talent occurs), in general I think teams coming out of retools should focus on quality over quantity.

We dont need to make more 3rd or 4th round picks at this point - the cupboards are pretty full of the caliber of prospect you get in day 2. We need to make sure we're getting another impact player at the top of our drafts while the plethora of picks from the last 3 years work through the system.

If anything, trade up - though I doubt there will be a good opportunity to do so.

Not necessarily. It’d depend on how the Blues see the draft and specifically what the options are when pick 19 comes along.

I personally would prefer them to just take the highest rated player left on their board at 19 (or even consider moving up) but maybe the next guy on their list they know most have ranked lower and thus there’d be a good chance they could get that same player at ~ pick 25 but also get another pick on top of it.

So while I’d lean towards just taking the pick, it’d all depend on how the first 18 picks go tbh. If they do trade down, I’d like to see them go after someone like Brzustewicz or Gastrin.

Me personally, I'm hoping they trade up...

We have a LOT of prospect depth, including a few that could probably get us a pick a bit earlier (thinking one of Montreal's), if the Blues covet a player, I could see them moving up to grab him.

Maybe if the Blues stay in the first round and all of their targeted players are gone. But that scenario seems unlikely. Look at it this way, if all the middle projection players were taken earlier then the earlier projection players are still around. Why you don't see this often.

I am fine with how the Blues ended up where they are with this draft. They spend those picks better than probably anyone will this year.
