I was looking at Winn the other day. I was wondering why he didn't have a higher WAR. 0.9 at SS isn't that great (even Swanson with a lower average and higher strikeout rate is at 2.3)
Winn's defense should elevate him to a way higher WAR, right? Or is his defense just overrated?

That’s one metric. The WAR number I showed were Baseabll Reference, which has him at .09 vs Fangraphs’ 1.9.scoutyjones2 wrote: ↑20 Jun 2025 19:17 pm3rd in all of MLB in outs above averagevegascardsfan5890 wrote: ↑20 Jun 2025 19:14 pm I was looking at Winn the other day. The defensive stats are crazy as two show him down and the Outs Above Average show him up:
Total Zone (Baseball Reference): -2 vs +11 last year
DRS - (Fangraphs): -2 vs +14 last year
OAA (Statcast) - +10 vs +3 last year
His range factor is well above league average so I don’t get the two that show him down so much.

Re: WAR by position - OF, 3b and SS hurting
Winn's in his sophomore year. Some latitude.
Didn't see today's game but heard the announcers commenting on Winn not running out his first grounder today. The infielder fumbled but still had time to catch Winn due to his failure to run. Burleson's double would have easily scored him. Wondering if he's hurt or we have an attitude problem... Hope this is a real outlier.

According to defensive runs saved hes currently -2 but he was +14 last year. Defensive stats state that they need full seasons worth of data- sometime multiple seasons to be fully accurate and shouldnt t be judged in short sample sizes so idnexoect his defemse to flgo back in positive zone by years endvegascardsfan5890 wrote: ↑20 Jun 2025 19:14 pm I was looking at Winn the other day. If Winn would hustle to first might be better.

I'm not worried about Winn at all. He's got a chance to be a superstar. His defense is great. There are a lot of targets to make the Cards better but Winn isn't one of them.
