Re: NHL Needs Answers From Game 6 Refs
You aren't wrong but there is an argument to be made that there is some consistency, at least when we get to this time of year, and especially late in series. I don't have any data in front of me but I suspect if you go back in time you will find SCF, or even conference finals, games 6 and 7 especially, very, very few penalties. I'm trying to recall our game 7 in 2019. I know someone (Parayko?) shot the puck over the glass and the B's had a PP early in the first. Other than that and without looking at the box score, I don't recall any other PP's. Like I said, I suspect more often than not it's like that late in the series.theograce wrote: ↑18 Jun 2025 12:20 pmJust make it consistent. Slightly OT but the other sports are just as bad if not worse. Strike zones in BB differ wildly depending on umps. One NFL crew might call holding all day while the next rarely calls it. And the NBA, no idea what a foul is, and that's when you don't have to worry about the ref having money on the game.
Re: NHL Needs Answers From Game 6 Refs
Yeah for sure. But it turns into an entirely different game. The interference is permitted and guys adapt to a different game entirely.George Zipp wrote: ↑18 Jun 2025 12:28 pmYou aren't wrong but there is an argument to be made that there is some consistency, at least when we get to this time of year, and especially late in series. Every game is crucial. They should be striving for consistency. Anything else makes zero sense.

Yeah, with the interference and stick holding and clutching and all of that, agree totally that it's called one way early in the series and another later.theograce wrote: ↑18 Jun 2025 12:33 pmYeah for sure. I guess it's kind of like the US Open on Sunday. It was raining, the course was wet and brutal but they all had to play in it. They knew it. Same thing applies here. The teams and players all pretty much know how a game 6 or 7 is getting called. JJ Spaun is the Florida Panthers, or something like that

You can make the argument that the Cup tests versatility and being able to handle the adversity of inconsistent standards game to game. That said, I have usually noticed that the calls in a series generally happen in the earlier games. By 5 6 and 7 they realize there's a serious contest afoot and every NHL player should expect minimal calls and adapt to that reality. I personally prefer the best 5 on 5 team to win. It always feels like the old bones of the sport demand 5v5 best as the final test. It's why the best hockey is no power play sudden death 5 on 5 IMO.

That a pretty nice analogy actually.George Zipp wrote: ↑18 Jun 2025 12:36 pmYeah, with the interference and stick holding and clutching and all of that, agree totally that it's called one way early in the series and another later.theograce wrote: ↑18 Jun 2025 12:33 pmYeah for sure. Yup and it’s not the refs. Change comes from up top. Inconsistency is a hallmark of the NHL, just look at the Dept.of Player Safety. But the good news is that the referring wasn’t much of a factor in this series and the best team - by far - won the Cup.
Re: NHL Needs Answers From Game 6 Refs
Right. We were two Florida brain farts away from a sweep. You can say the Oil were missing Hyman, but we were missing Holloway and no one felt sorry for us. It’s part of the game.Frank Underwood wrote: ↑18 Jun 2025 12:44 pm Inconsistency is a hallmark of the NHL, just look at the Dept.of Player Safety. I've always been on the side of "let the boys play hockey". Obvious, flagrant stuff tends to die down a bit as the playoffs move along also because players have more injuries to contend with, so I don't believe they mind the officials laying off some. You won't find these reasons in the playbook, it's just NHL hockey. It's also just my opinion.

Re: NHL Needs Answers From Game 6 Refs
I guess we're in the minority, but I agree. All season long there's nothing but whining about this call or that call in regular season games; and then the playoffs come around and it's "let the players play". I can live with either side, but pick a side and go with it. Goes for all sports, pick a set of rules and enforce them. Shouldn't matter if it's game 1 of the season or a Championship game.Clark Kimble wrote: ↑17 Jun 2025 23:43 pm Not one single minor penalty all night long? SERIOUSLY??!!
There were high sticks and callable offenses on both sides, but ignoring the blatant trip on a rushing McDavid in the 3rd period with FL up 3-0 was grievous.
Refs finally woke up in time to send Evander Kane packing (hopefully for good) with a misconduct. I hope it didn't burden them too much.
Great Florida Panthers team...and Tkachuk playing all 4 series through a groin muscle ripped OFF THE BONE??? Hats off and a standing O.

I hate that nonsense. Either eliminate all penalties in the reg season or call them in the playoffs. I hate the 2 different rulebooks.Spyro Gyra wrote: ↑17 Jun 2025 23:48 pmI believe you misunderstood what he said. That injury is what he suffered at the 4 Nations tournament, not during the SC playoffs. He said he was over that injury and feeling better every game during the playoffs. The refs putting their whistles away during games like this is certainly nothing new and didn't surprise me in the least. Let the boys decide it has been the mantra ever since I started watching hockey in 1967.Clark Kimble wrote: ↑17 Jun 2025 23:43 pm Not one single minor penalty all night long? SERIOUSLY??!!

I hate gamesnwhere the rules arent followed. If you want that, eliminate penalties in the regular season and make that all legal. If not call the penalties in the playoffs. Its not a fair 5vs5 if you get to break the rules.Pierre McGuire wrote: ↑18 Jun 2025 05:58 am Absolute beautiful game called by the refs. As a fan, that’s all you can ask for…5 on 5 best on best.
