This was a franchise altering draft

Post by TheJackBurton »

Love them (nobody here really does) or hate them (pretty much everyone does) this was a franchise altering draft for the Red Wings.
On this day in 1989, the Red Wings drafted Mike Sillinger, Bob Boughner, Nicklas Lidström, Sergei Fedorov, Dallas Drake and Vladimir Konstantinov.

All of them played 400 or more games in the NHL. #LGRW
Imagine a team pulling off a draft like that ever again. With scouting the way it is nowadays I just don't see it ever happening again for an individual team.

The Stars have to win some cups first but Heiskanen, Oettinger, and Robertson in 2017 is a massive draft for them.

I hated them as rivals of ours and I hate them every single time I see a replay of The Goal.

But when they weren't facing us, I really did enjoy watching them do their thing. Incredible team.

Side note - wish they were still in our division.

Very true. That was a hell of a draft as well.

Jack, imagine how much better that draft would look if Konstantinov hadn’t been injured. Still an absolutely unbelievable draft haul, but it could have been even better!

Without a doubt. They could be looking at 3 HOF from that draft.

I loved the rivalry, even if we weren't their number 1. I always viewed them as our most hated over the blackhawks. Now I see it as the Avs are our most hated. But how miserable would it be if say Utah was exchanged for the Red Wings. The central is already arguably the biggest wagon division in hockey. As far as consistency goes those franchises are always busting people up. If the Red Wings were back in it and they returned to former glory, that would be disgusting. But maybe they never will. It's weird to think how far we are from them being relevant. 9 strait years no playoff appearances. lost first round the 3 years previous to that. Won in 08 and lost in cup final in 09. we are going nearly 20 years of non relevant Red Wing hockey. Kid me would never have believed that.

Imagine how much better it would be if they had been able to draft Pavel Bure as well. They tried in the 5th round, but it was thought by the league that he wasn't eligible yet. The Canucks drafted him a round later with documentation to prove that he was.

That is something I did not know.

6 guys from one draft. That's crazy. Konstantinov might have been the best in that whole group. He was a beast and I'm a huge Fedorov fan.

The Blues are lucky if they get 1 guy that plays....ever.

Good lord that is awful. Marshall did get in 526 games so while not a complete bust, Bobby Holik was taken right behind him.

The rest of that draft though was absolutely dismal. There are a few more household names, but overall what a terrible draft class.

It's hard to imagine out of that draft class Detroit basically had the draft they did and Pavel Bure was in it as well.
