One of the few remaining players from the 1964 World Champions has died. Ron Taylor was a key part in the crucial Game 4 Cardinals comeback victory. Ray Sadecki started and was knocked out giving up 3 runs in the 1st inning. Roger Craig took over from Sadecki, pitching 4 2/3 innings of shutout ball. After Ken Boyer’s grand slam put the Cardinals on top 4-3, Taylor pitched 4 innings of no-hit shutout ball for the save.
He would be traded the following year along with Mike Cuellar (yes, THAT Mike Cuellar) in what turned out to be one of Bob Howsam’s worst deals) for reliever Hal Woodeschick. Woodeschick would be a very good reliever in 65-66 before tailing off in 1967 and retiring. Taylor would go on to be the closer for the 1969 Miracle Mets . Cuellar, of course, would go onto Baltimore and was a mainstay 20 game winner and won 2 Cy Young Awards (albeit sharing one with Denny McLain).
RIP Ron Taylor

RIP Dr. Taylor. Not many left from the 1964 team. And it was such an exciting team.

Not only was Cuellar jettisoned but also Mike Torrez and later Reuss and oh yeah, Stevie!
Thanks for the memories Ron.

Re: RIP Ron Taylor
In 1964 I was a 10 year old little league player and the 1964 Cardinals made me a Cardinal Fan for life. As many good teams as I have lived to see that 64 team is still my all time favorite. Ken Boyer is my all time favorite but there were so many good players on that team. RIP Ron Taylor the Cardinals probably don't win the series without you. Thankful KMOX boomed into Northeast Arkansas back in those days so I could hear Jack and Harry do the games.
