With Devers gone, does that motivate Red Sox to consider Arenado once again ?

Post by ramfandan »

Yes, the Boston Red Sox are reportedly still interested in acquiring Nolan Arenado from the St. Louis Cardinals, even after trading Rafael Devers. The potential trade has been discussed, with a key sticking point being the amount of Arenado's remaining salary the Cardinals are willing to absorb. With Devers now out of the picture, the Red Sox may be even more motivated to pursue Arenado, potentially moving him to third base.

It appeared in offseason that Arenado would waive his NTC to go to Boston. Your thoughts on Mo/Bloom dealing Nado to Bloom's former franchise .
Red Sox sure have a lot more $$$ in the bank account after unloading the remainder of the $300M /10 yr. Devers contract .

Why would they want him? They have their 3rd baseman, he’s head and shoulders better. And Arenado is aging and is not having anywhere close a good enough season offensively to justify a mid season career change moving him to first base and learning that on the fly

Bregman's $80M/2yr remaining at the end of the season has $20M per season deferred 10+ years so it is only worth ~$60M/2yr.

If he has a great season, and he is currently having one, he would be wise to opt out and sign a new longer term deal after his age 31 season.

Then the Red Sox may be looking for a 3B and Arenado is friends with Story. The Green Monster would also be his new friend.

Exactly? Why would you want a 600 OPS/93 OPS+, and aged 3b that you move to 1b, where he's never played?

I'd ask for Luken Baker!

I don't think so

Rumors have them once again being in payroll slashing mode and T. Story could be next to go.

The ONLY reason NADO would even waive his NTC would be to play w/his pal Story.

If his agent gets wind of Story being moved, no way NADO ways.

But again, I don't see the Sox calling for him.

The cardinals are likely stuck with Arenado for the remainder of his contract. Hopefully not. Hope he goes somewhere and has a resurgence. Not looking good in my opinion unless he picks it up over the next six weeks

I’m sure there are a number of teams who would like to have Arenado at 3B.
He is still a plus/plus defender and an above average bat.
But then you have to factor in:
Age
Contract($37M owed 2026/2027!)
Cost in talent to acquire?
*No trade clause!!!!!

Even if they get little in return they might be forced to send more $$ than comfortable with?
In that case might be better to keep him at least for the start of 2026??

Last 3 years OPS+
2023 108
2024 101
2025 93

He’s been on decline. I wouldn’t consider him an above average bat anymore. He’s at best average, but really below average.

2018: 133
2019: 131
2020: 86
2021: 119
2022: 151
2023: 108
2024: 101
2025: 93

Take out 2020 for being 60 games and 2022 for being a total outlier and his decline is almost perfect.

This nonense about Arenado somehow being incapable of playing first is laughable. If you can master third base, there is no reason why you can't master first, which is easier to play. It's the least taxing position on the field.

The reason the Bosox don't need Arendo at first is his offense.

He's hitting .243/.304/.388/.692.

The combination of players that the Bosox have used at first base this year are hitting .247/.307/.401/.709

What is their gain of having Arenado at first??????

The Cardinals best chance to trade Arenado likely came and went when he passed on Houston this past offseason. I'd love to know his thoughts now that the Astros are up 4.5 on their division. Factor in luxury tax implications for many of his acceptable targets and his decline at the plate and that's a tough deal to move. Eventually the Cards may have to eat a large portion of that deal or even release him after '26 to let someone younger play. If Boston wants a Cardinal corner IF I agree Burleson would be their best target.

Opinions vary.
I would not consider him a below average bat but that is me.

Above average bat? His OBP is .304.
