Shortstop Future

Post by Basil Shabazz »

Just putting it out there for discussion, not because I’m advocating(at this time).

If JJW is a plus capable SS, should the Cardinals consider trading Masyn Winn?

I bring this up, because the Cards would have to probably do something risky or provocative to get the franchise out of Jeff Fisher territory.

What would Winn’s value be on the market? Could we get either a front of the rotation starter who is cost controlled? An OF power bat that is cost controlled?

As I said, just for discussion at this point.

Ok just for discussion. My issue. Getting that TOR cost controlled stud is the goal but it comes with perils. I’d much rather go the big bat route on this trade. Bats don’t get injured like arms do.

So to summarize I’d do it for a huge bat, not pitcher. If I did it at all.

The smart answer is no.

Winn is part of the solution.

Stealing from Peter to pay Paul.

Arenado on multiple occasions has said Winn emerging into star player. One of slickest defensive SS in game with cannon arm.
Too SS make huge bucks in FA.. currently in $25M per year range.
Winn has 3 years til FA. He may want to test the waters .
If Cards can’t extend him, then trade him . Open to return but would like to see a power bat in a deal.

The one thing you don ‘t want is to have him play out his deal here and get a comp pick only. Got to resign him or blockbuster deal if you can’t keep him.

I think it depends partially on if Winn is inclined to sign here long term. If there’s no indication that he’s open to a relatively team friendly deal, he’s probably the team’s second base trade chip behind Wetherholt.

I do wonder if Winn’s perceived value by fans far exceeds his market value. I think people love him primarily because of Ozzie, as there is a lot of fan nostalgia around great defense at SS. The bat might not be worth it.

I don't think the return for Winn would be equal to the value he brings to the Cardinals.

J.J. (IMO) will be shifted back to 2nd base when he comes up.

BTW, this from cbssportsline's RJ Anderson:

The Cardinals continue to play him at shortstop, but I have to imagine he transitions back to second base by the time he reaches the majors -- and, at this point, I feel confident he's going to make his big-league debut before the summer is out.

Not so sure about that RJ.

Why do you believe he has 3 years to FA?

He was a rookie in 2024. Free agency after 2030 season.

I agree extend Winn now do not trade him. He has some Renteria-esque spark plug qualities. He can hit for clutch. But I think he will hit more home runs than Renteria. Could be a 20/20 player one day.

He is probably the best ss the cards have had since Renteria keep him until he gets too expensive

Well I'm not trading Winn. I'd rather trade Arenado and stick Wetherholt at 3B to start. I like Donny as a 2nd baseman, but maybe moving Donny to LF would be good especially if they trade Nootbaar. Then they can have a Donovan-Scott-Walker outfield with Wetherholt at 2B. I guess that's your way to get Gorman in the lineup, if you think of him more highly than Nootbaar after a couple big games. We know Gorman has the potential to be a game changer, while Noot has started to behave like the left-handed Harrison Bader. Twirling his bat, and smiling like a goofball after taking a 3rd strike. And plenty of time on the IL just like Bader. You can take Wetherholt and stick him right in Nootbaar's leadoff slot. Then bring back Bader for 4th OF so you never have to see Siani or Vilade again.

I don’t think a team like the cardinals who have a shortage of good players should trade a good player to make room for a good player. Trade gorman move jj to second and Donovan to left or trade Arenado and move jj or start trying jj in a corner outfield spot but keep winn right where he’s at

We have a great shortstop with elite defense and good offense.
Wetherholt isn't near elite at SS defensively. In fact, I'm not sure his arm plays at 3b.

Masyn Winn's scouting grades in minors: 55 hit grade/ 45 power/ 60 run / 60 field grade / 80 arm

JJ Wetherholt's grades in monors: ----- Hit: 65 | Power: 55 | Run: 55 | Field: 50 | Arm: 50

The future is here and he's playing short stop right now.
Why don't we let him continue to develop and not trade him quite just yet.
