JuanAgosto wrote: 11 Jun 2025 13:11 pm Mo's inability to judge talent and compete for top free agents caused the organization to fall from perennial playoff participants to this reset. The man sucked at attracting top players. He went from losing out on fa to not even trying to acquire them.

I believe this inability led to overspending on mediocre to bad free agents. Guys like Leake, Cecil, Miller. This caused BDW to tighten the wallet. Had Mo been better at handing out contracts, then maybe DeWitt has interest in going for a guy like Harper.

But it's too late to turn back. I don't see BDW jr or BDW 3 being interested in signing a difference maker anytime soon.
All true, but I'm talking about anything he could do in the time he has left that would be a final impression to help, or hurt, his legacy.
It's too late now. BDW finally neutered him with the reset.
I've got to admit, I'm pretty entrenched in my disdain for the way he has done his job for the past 10 years. He has been hard to respect and even harder to like. As he has surrounded himself by "yes men" over the past 10 years, the team had become hard to respect and hard to like. This is reflected in the attendance. The team this year has generally performed well and is much easier to like. Leaving with the anticipation of better baseball that a top 5 farm system would represent actually would soften some of the harsh thoughts I have on the subject.

Whether it was his choice or DeWitt's he is moving on. I wish him the best.
He wouldn’t have made that trade if Tony Larussa wasn’t basically demanding it because he was so sick of Colby and his daddy. And Tony had the credibility to make that happen. Which is why we no longer saw managers with experience/credibility

In all fairness Mo brought Goldie and Nado to St Louis. That was the cornerstone pieces to a title. They failed in August & September. He did bring some pitching. He also brought a coffin full of stiffs.

True, but how things go for the next 2 months is going to matter for a long time.

I'll give him credit for Goldschmidt. But not for Arenado. BDW had to finalize that deal with a call to Colorado. That trade was made by the owner.

Would a playoff run, or a top 5 farm system soften the way you look at his tenure?

Tony did what the did a lot - wore out his starting pitching. Then he retired because he knew Pujols wasn't returning.

Probably against the grain with this opinion, but if he added a piece that pushed a strong playoff run and contributes next year, I would soften. A top 5 farm system does little for me. Walker was once the top MLB prospect. Rankings mean nothing.

Somewhat agree, but not entirely. I think the rankings do mean something, but they are not the end-all be-all. Certainly not a sure thing. Alex Reyes was about the most "can't miss" pitching prospect I ever saw- young, electric stuff, smooth, composed. Didn't happen. I hear you.
