Sly (and The Family) Stone Dead at 82

Post by Clark Kimble »

Truth be told, I was not a fan until attending a Kenny Loggins concert at the San Diego County Fair's Del
Mar Racetrack.

On that day, though, one Sly Stone song stuck with me forever: "Hot Fun In the Summertime", which the DelMar PA system aired over the emptying bleachers several minutes after Loggins bade adieu. As I was packing my stuff I saw a middle-aged couple --- possibly reunited after many years, like the song suggests? --- slow-dancing and seriously into the song and each other.

It was a romantic scene no film producer could create as they enjoyed their sweet, sooo slow dance after the county fair in the country sun, perhaps reliving their own "first of the fall and then she goes back.....Bye, bye, bye, bye there.....".

Bye, bye, bye, bye there, Sly Stone; RIP.

Sylvester Stewart was a talented dude for certain. My favorite Sly and the Family Stone song:

Everybody is a Star

Prince, The Red Hot Chili Peppers and others borrowed from Sly's Funk R&B Rock Soul Sound.

As did Michael Jackson and even Miles Davis (from his (buzz)'s Brew phase). Sly was a true pioneer in his fusion of R&B, Rock and Jazz into Psychedelic Funk.
