The Blues Need To Figure Out Who They Are This Offseason

The Blues need to figure out who they are this offseason

Tyler Kuehl
Jun 9, 2025

Among the teams already in their offseason, the St. Louis Blues are a team that has some decisions to make.

This past season, the Blues went from a team that was meddling around the middle of the Central Division to squeaking into the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Thanks to the heroics of Jordan Binnington, St. Louis managed to take the President’s Trophy-winning Winnipeg Jets to a seven games.

Now, after a year that saw general manager Doug Armstrong make numerous big swings, from a coaching change to offer sheets to a couple of key trades, many wonder what’s in store this summer for the Blues.

On Monday’s edition of Daily Faceoff LIVE, Frank Seravalli and Tyler Yaremchuk discuss what the offseason priorities need to be for the Blues.

Fix the 6-on-5 and they'll be fine as they are

Blues will be an offensive juggernaut under Montgomery. We'll see if Army can do anything this off season to further accelerate the growth of this team.

Not seeing an identity crisis with this team.

They're missing a few pieces but know that and let's see what the summer brings.

Their to do list this offseason:

1) 2nd line center preferably, if not a top 3rd line center (this is the absolute priority)

2) See if you can acquire a younger top 4 RHD (this likely doesn't happen unless they go crazy in UFA)

3) Fix the 6-5

4) Fix the PK

Do those 4 things and we are in for a great year boys and girls.

I was done at the title of the post, figure out who they are? Did the author not watch the first round series at all? The Blues are tough two way team that checks, hits has some speed and skill. They are promoting the young forwards they have developed and it panned out. They filled in gaps in their draft classes and needs with offer sheets. Its pretty simple.

Lost me at "thanks to the heroics of Jordan Binnington the Blues took the President's Cup winners to game 7." Uh, ok.

We scored something like 27 goals in our three home games and turned Vezina God into a beer league goalie. Didn't he get yanked all three games. I vividly remember the greatest crowd goalie chant ever "we want Connor."

Give a guy a computer and he is a blogger. Cool. And no knock on you TBone. Please keep posting the content. Most of it is great reading/watching.

The Blues are a well rounded great 2 way team. They have hard nosed players up and down the lineup. The players who were previously called floaters--Jordan Kyrou--are now becoming good 2 way players.

They know who they are--

Agree with everyone else about how they already know who they are.

I think adding a defensively solid center who can win faceoffs and kill penalties should the priority - takes care of items 3, 4, and arguably 1.

Faksa was a defensively solid center who won faceoffs.

It was the absolute panic they went into when it was 6-5 that caused all the issues.

They definitely have holes when one player getting injured affects the whole lineup - we saw it with Thomas, Broberg, and Holloway that were injured at different times last year - just one of them being out threw the rotation into a funk. Having Faulk on the roster next season will be a terrible mistake - he has to go even if it takes a pick or prospect to sweeten the deal. If Hofer signs elsewhere then getting into the playoffs again isn't a guarantee - he was the better goalie at times last season.

Calling the Blues a finished product today is settling for mediocre imo.

I think Hofer and Ellis will be the goalies for the 27-28 season. Binner is under contract this year and next.
Hofer is developed. Hes worth a lot. No sense in trading him. Binnington will be 32 this summer. 33 next summer and a free agent at 34. At that point The Blues will move on from him imo. This is his last contract.
The Blues have an identity and need to stay the course. Build from within or swap pics and prospects for the parts we need.

I don't recall ANYONE calling the Blues a finished product. Much improved, yes. Your statement is hyperbolic at best. We (the Blues fans) and management know there are missing pieces and there is work to be done.

Hofer also had about two weeks where he was awful. They need to have him under contract - especially with the Olympics in 26 and Binner on the short list - and likely the starter for Team Canada given his performance in 4Nations. Blues will need to manage his time before and after the Games.

To fix the 6 on 5, the Blues need some wingspan on the backend. Need your shutdown guys to be able to really clog up lanes with sticks.

Kyrou may be doing better as a 2 way player, but he still lacks toughness when games and seasons are on the line. I remain unconvinced that he has the mettle to battle through 4 rounds of the SC Playoffs when he can barely get through one.
