I kind of feel like Arnold seems like the most likely pick at 5. High floor guy who has had a nice college career, but I'm not sure I'd be all that excited for him. His arm slot worries me and I would love a higher potential guy with how rare we pick in the top 5.

I agree, Arnold is fine but i want to gamble in the top 5 for a potential super star. We aren't here often. I want Hernandez if he is there. High risk (very high), very high reward?

Is that the pick to be gambling on more so than any other draft?

And what's wrong with a solid #3 for 6-8 seasons?

I kind of think so. We never pick this low and likely won't again for a very long time. I'd swing for the effing fences here...no pun intended

Nothing...but at #5, I want to take a chance on a superstar

Nothing...but at #5, I want to take a chance on a superstar

Of course.
Every one of us wants one or more from this draft

I just don't know that any of us can predict what happens very well on either
the floor or the upside.

They Cards will have a chance at all but 4 players. Extremely fortunate that being in that #5 spot
and the players taken that high all should have upside.

I'm coming from a spot that says that the players at that point in the draft have a nearly equal upside.
It's more about who teams and like better and good old biased opinions. Some teams won't pick HS pitchers
this high. Biases' based in past experiences. Not perceived upside.

Do you see a world where you're so underwhelmed by the Top of this particular draft, that you have guys like Summerhill and Irish tickling your fancy? Is Anderson so much better than Doyle and Arnold, or are the relatively the same, one is better for 2 weeks, then the other guy takes over...none of them are elite? Can we stomach 6 or 7 years of development before Hernandez is ready for the Majors? It sounds like Willits and Holliday won't be there at #5...do you see a world where we take little lower than slot Irish or Summerhill?

The under-slot strategy is like trading down in the NFL draft: if you don’t have many elite grades on your board, and have a whole bunch of guys lumped close together in the next tier (or two), then trading down for more picks (in the NFL) or spreading/smoothing out slot money (in MLB) is certainly a rational strategy.
