Will we be the last team to have a player with 10+ HRs this season?

Hunter Goodman (Rockies) hit his 10th HR a few days ago, George Springer (Toronto) hit 2 over the weekend to get to 10 HRs, and Pasquantino (Royals) got to 10 HRs with a couple over the weekend as well.

That leaves us (Noot is our leader with 8 HRs) and the White Sox (Miguel Vargas leads with 9 HRs) as the only two teams in baseball without a 10+ HR player this season.

Perhaps unwittingly as it may be the Cardinals may show the metric nerds that putting the ball in play is a pretty good way to win games.

Individually the team has no one people are afraid to pitch too but collectively being able to put the ball in play and just as importantly catch the ball has them in a surprising position to this point.

Lot of season left to play but at least for now its a more entertaining way of watching the games.

For all the veteran haters on this board, Goldy led the team in HRs last year and Nado would lead this team with 1 more HR.

Neither of them is the 2022 version of themselves anymore but we certainly haven’t had any younger players actually step up and replace that power at an all star level. This is becoming a problem with the idea of a youth movement.

Contreras is out producing Goldy from last year and Herrera is out producing Contreras from last year. Ultimately I think we’ll have a nice upgrade from both spots I think, which is what I said in the offseason would happen. But yes Arenado is still probably better than what we have. Although Gorman has a .760 OPS over his last 44 PAs. But his defense will never match Arenado’s, so he probably has to put up an .800 OPS to match Arenado as a player.

btw, where does this team rank in doubles? I'd rather have 4-5 guys hitting doubles than 1 or 2 hitting homers

We are 4th in doubles.

Donovan: T-3rd
Contreras: T-27th
Noot: T-53rd
Winn: T-69th
Nado: T-86th
VS2: T-120th

It is nice that we rank high in doubles, it is an area we have struggled with mostly for the last 10 years. But it would be nice to have a little more HR power, too. Of the 14 teams that rank above league average in runs scored, we are one of 3 teams that rank below league average in HRs. The other 2 are the Brewers and Phillies.

Indeed. Count me in too. Much more entertaining baseball and a MUCH better team approach to hitting. Guys like Nado and WC and Winn at the start of the season, get into big slumps when they are trying to hit a 5 run homer on every swing. Put the ball in play. Take a shot at the fence in a favorable count only. The offense is not hurting the team. Homers will come. WC, Nado, Herrera all have power. Then there are guys like Winn and Noot who can hit 10-15 dingers. That is fine. Give me a team of guys who don't K and hit a lot of doubles. Play great D and hope the pitching holds....

It's pretty amazing the Cards are tied for 8th in MLB in Runs Scored w/the dearth of home run power on this team (24th).

As mentioned already it's the doubles (4th) that have really kept them scoring lots of runs coupled w/their hit total (5th).

But going forward in 2026 this team really does need to find another Goldy or NADO (before their age related slides), that guy who could hit 30+ HR's and drive in 100 runs.

Tough but as we saw w/Goldy & NADO it can be done.

Let's hope C. Bloom can find one.

They're basically the Royals teams of the last decade. Royals had the lowest strikeouts in the lead by a lot in 2014 and 2015 when they had success. Cardinals are currently 8th. Both teams had great defense and average starting pitching. Royals had the 3 headed monster in the bullpen though (Herrera, Holland, Davis). 2015 Royals home run leader had 22 (Moustakas and Morales).

I'm certainly not predicting world series, or even playoffs for that matter, but it's pretty entertaining to watch.

They hit the fewest HRs of any team in the 1980s and won 3 pennants. On the other side of that same coin, they hit the fewest HRs of any team in the 1970s and didn't win nothin'. Whiteball was exciting; the 70s were not.

And that comment brings this little side discussion back to the point of the thread. The Cards at the time were desperate to ge their HRs up, so they traded for Brunansky, which really didn't improve the WAR profile of the team. They figured out years later that to increase HRs they had to move the fences in and lower them. That paved the way for Big Mac.
