BUFFALO, N.Y. — Before Mathieu Turcotte coached Justin Carbonneau for two seasons in the QMJHL with the Blainville-Boisbriand Armada, Carbonneau used to attend his hockey camps in Levis. Back then, Carbonneau “was always high-end skill-wise.” A few years later, though, Carbonneau also has something else, according to Turcotte.
“He’s a tank,” Turcotte said on a phone call earlier this year. “He really is. And he plays through s— that a lot of guys wouldn’t even practice with. He’s really built different. With age and physical maturity, he has the body of a power forward.”
These days, he’s NHL Central Scouting’s No. 16-ranked North American skater and a projected top-20 pick in the 2025 NHL Draft.

Blues want someone who can jump right in and learn at the NHL level it could be this guy...there will be (hopefully) ALOT of talent available at 19 I just hope the Blues don't do something stupid like trade down or pick a Dman.

I’d be happy with Carbonneau at 19. There’s a few others I like more that I’m hoping will drop to 19 but I’d be happy with Carbonneau too. But I’d say there’s really only maybe a 25% chance he’s still on the board at 19. He’s projected to go a little higher.
It’s not official yet but sounds like he’s likely leaving the Q and heading to Boston College in the fall.

This is my top forward in this range but I refuse to believe the Canadiens pass on him twice. He caught my eye big time during a Moncton/Pekarcik game. He plays like Holloway, but on RW.

Thanks - I didn't think so, but I've seen several mock drafts or comments that suggest he goes to Montreal (including Seattle's, above), enough to make me curious if there was more to it than just that he's almost exactly ranked to fall within their back-to-back picks.

It’s just that he’s a French Canadian kid and some think the Canadiens will pick a French Canadian if they can.Army's Mom wrote: ↑05 Jun 2025 11:53 amThanks - I didn't think so, but I've seen several mock drafts or comments that suggest he goes to Montreal (including Seattle's, above), enough to make me curious if there was more to it than just that he's almost exactly ranked to fall within their back-to-back picks.

Because they have two picks at 16 and 17 and Carbonneau probably ought to be picked higher than that so in the event he's there at 16 I can't imagine the Canadiens essentially snubbing him at that point. I have been touting Carbonneau for awhile now, once it became clear we were steering to the middle of the first round. But I do not think he will drop even to the Canadiens I see him going more like 12.
