The play where he didn't get to 2nd base was not a lack of effort . Looking at the replay on TV from the high angle, the Cards anticipated the bunt .
The plan was for Winn to go to 3rd base if Nado fields the ball. Replay shows Winn taking a few quick steps to 3rd..as ball is batted to the pitcher , Winn puts on the brakes and retreats quickly toward 2nd ( figuring Nado runs back to 3rd as the pitcher is now fielding the ball.
Winn can't back to 2nd in time. So not a 'lazy' play but the execution failed. Acutally Donovan was the guy who made the poor decision on that play. He didn't go to 1st to cover with Contreras crashing home from 1st and he didn't go to 2nd either.
The ball thrown to him that went under his glove was not a lazy play either. it was poor execution in catching it. Lazy to me means poor effort.
Not all his miscues today were lack of effort IMO As I said , not hustling running is definitely lack of effort . Errors in fielding are poor positioning with the feet , legs, glove etc. That's when you boot balls once in a while not because your effort was poor.
Not sure they heard you, but you are absolutely correct. They were anticipating a bunt. Winn was racing to 3d base with Arenado approaching the plate. Donovan was racing to 1B as Willson was halfway home. The only play was to 1B, but by the team Leahy realized he couldn’t go to 2B, he was late for 1B.

Weird play but there was NO laziness. Just a bad break.
Incorrect.

It was a comebacker directly to the pitcher.
N/A should have broken to the bag the second the ball was in play.
Leahy was shocked to see N/A frozen in place - he never took a single step.
He then turned to 2nd base - where Winn was standing about 3' from the bag - and was WATCHING the frozen N/A.
Winn likewise never moved an inch - though he had plenty of time to do so.
Again, Leahy was shocked - and then turned to 1b which of course was not covered because Contreras was rightfully closer to home plate when the play began than any other teammate.
Leahy made 4 MOVES with that play in progress, while neither Arenado nor Winn moved an inch.

So what’s your theory. We are knee deep in a race, so it wouldn’t be due to lack of interest.

My thought- two things- they are a bit tired from that road trip, and or - that was what that play, a bunt, was intended to do- create chaos. It worked.

Chances are most players would have acted, albeit wrong for the situation.

I’m more concerned here- Winn got his first error a throwing error. Then this play. Maybe his back or just a bit tired.

The endurance piece is a huge part of the assessment process in the reset.

My theory?
It is not like Winn at all.
Every player has a game every now and then during which he is not dialed in.
N/A was been unfocused for much of the past 2 years.
Winn, on the other hand, is usually sharp.
Not yesterday.
Jogging down the line, checking out of an important play, failing to catch a couple of fairly routine throws, and blowing an easy throw to 1b after taking too long to load up.
Tired?
Nonsense (unless he partied the night before).
Ready to catch a plane?
Possibly.
Taking the foot off the gas after a successful few weeks for the team?
Most likely reason.

Given his slight frame Oli has to start giving him a day off every few weeks or he's going to be 165 lbs come September.

Crazy isn't it? To think there's a need to worry about their 23 year old breaking down, again, a less than 60 games in and the begining of June.

I'm not buying this theory. It was a bad game...move on

He's not a big man, little guys like him who plays hard need time off.

And as you alluded BDog, w/the heat coming he's going to really need those days off to re-charge his batteries.

I get Oli wanting to play him , who wouldn't want him at SS every game?

But he's not Cal Ripken (6'4"/220 lbs)!

Rest him a game every 10, keep him fresh.

He's too important to run into the ground.

Another factor is where do we play from mid July to labor day. Those 40 games will be influenced by summer.

I’m confused, how is he “hurting” or “needs a day off”? He’s hitting .319 with an .800 OPS over his last 12 games and .409 with a .955 OPS over his last 5.

Crazy expectations here.

I think this is more of "what could happen" as the weather heats up issue, not based on one game.

1st Half 2024
.284 .332 .406 .739

2nd Half 2024
.247 .291 .427 .718

He's a slight guy playing a demanding position in one of the hottest baseball cities in the league.

Oli has to manage him correctly to keep him strong the entire season.

A) That’s not a very big difference at all OPS wise
B) His best month of the season last year was August. He had a rough September (.616 OPS). Happens to even great players like Arenado. I wouldn’t read too much into the splits. Young player playing in his longest season of his career. Not sure it’s going to constantly be an issue.

But even you say it- young player playing in his longest year. That’s a large part of the debate. Endurance.

Sorry. As often is the case, you are wrong. Arenado was half way home. He would lose a race to 3B. Of course it was a comebacker to the mound...but, everybody was anticipating the bunt. Linn wasn't within 30 feet of the bag when Leahy got the ball. He was racing to 3B to cover and couldn't have possibly gotten back to 2B. You need to take another look at the play.
