Matthew Schaefer, the top player in FCHockey’s Final ranking for the 2025 NHL Draft, will participate at the 2025 NHL Scouting Combine.

The combine begins Monday at KeyBank Center and LECOM HarborCenter in Buffalo. It runs from June 2-7.

Schaefer, No. 1 in FCHockey’s Final ranking, did not played after sustaining a broken collarbone while representing Canada at the 2025 IIHF World Junior Championship. He had 22 points (seven goals, 15 assists) in 17 games with Erie in the Ontario Hockey League. He will participate in several fitness testing events at the Combine, but not participate in pull-ups or bench press, according to NHL.com.

A total of 58 forwards, 27 defensemen, and five goaltenders will attend the combine. There, they’ll be tested in a gamut of physical exercises and will engage in one-on-one interviews with interested teams.

I noticed that yesterday. Interesting there’s only 90 invitees this year. Normally it’s an even 100. Maybe that’s a reflection of this being a bit weaker draft? Or maybe just a cost cutting move, idk. I’m sure it costs the NHL quite a bit to fly in 90-100 kids from various countries and then cover their hotel for a week.

The first 4-5 days are by far the most important but also the part we just don’t get to see - the interviews. They’ll all go through a physical at some point, get officially weighed and measured to a quarter inch of their height and then the fitness tests will occur the last 2 days.
