I thought about bringing up the foot injury that significantly disrupted his progression, but then figured what's the point--It's just a waste of time.

Yes, Taveras was not a completed player, but was seriously slowed that season because of that injury which was an ankle injury if I remember correctly. It was sad that he messed up driving that car. No telling how things would have gone in his future.

It was about the defense at that time.
The guy was a statue out there.
Neither could hit, but at least Gritchuk could play
excellent in the field.
