That's obvious. So factor in who is producing better at the current time for best results. And make changes, if needed, accordingly.Basil Shabazz wrote: ↑29 May 2025 12:08 pmHere is a clue.... the first 7 weeks are just as crucial as the next 7 weeks and those are just as crucial as the last 7 weeks. The current time doesn’t necessarily mean they will continue to do that. Otherwise they’d be changing the lineup around every day, which is the kind of attention span you have.Shady wrote: ↑29 May 2025 12:10 pmSo factor in who is producing better at the current time. So you'll ignore base running and defense? And consistency?OldRed wrote: ↑29 May 2025 08:20 amNo, he has not not been a more consistent hitter. That's my point, platoon them and get the most from both. Sounds like many have forgotten Burleson hit 20 HRs last year with 78 RBI, which would match any of Contreras years in his career. Plus, he is several years younger and should improve.
Contreras: .807 OPS 116 OPS +
Burleson: .715 OPS 97 OPS+
Your boy isn't even a league average hitter in 1053 career ABs. His fWAR is 0.0 in 2025.

Genuis! The players will have so much rhythm and confidence knowing they are being yo-yo'd in and out of the line up every time they have a rough few series. Do you understand that baseball is a game of failure and the best players are not going to perform 2/3 of the time? You have to go off of the track record until a player regresses for an extended period of time. Especially when you are discussing displacing a player with WCs track record.
Re: Burleson/Contreras
I just don't like to see a player hitting in a prime spot in the lineup for an extended period of time when they are not producing the way the spot demands. When another player is producing better.Futuregm2 wrote: ↑29 May 2025 12:12 pmThe current time doesn’t necessarily mean they will continue to do that. Also, leadership matters! If the last few years have not proven that to us! Contreras is the veteran emotional leader of this team. You want to tank the culture? Bench Contreras for a 6 game swoon. Ask Oli how that worked out for him a few years ago.

You have no idea who the players turn to for leadership.OldRed wrote: ↑29 May 2025 08:42 amI would consider Donavon the leader with a close second to Winn. Just because Contreras is a vocal figure doesn't mean he is a leader. This team is revolving to the younger players which in my opinion has made the vast improvement in their play and record. Burleson is the future at 1st base, not Contreras. Again, just my opinion.ecleme22 wrote: ↑29 May 2025 08:38 amBurleson's career vs RHP: .271 BA / .753 OPSOldRed wrote: ↑29 May 2025 08:33 amCareer wise, Burleson has been the better hitter for average and OBP. His season last year was as good as any Contreras has had his career and remember Contreras played in a hitter's park in Chicago. As shown last night and many other games this year Contreras is not producing. A platoon could be used in my opinion.
Conteras' career vs RHP: .252 BA / .787 OPS
And WC was better vs RHP last year.
Maybe WC could use a day off, but a straight platoon? No way.
Also, I really like WC at 1B as a leader of the infield.
Re: Burleson/Contreras
It wouldn't be criminal for Contreras to move down in the lineupfor a while. Like they did with Arenado. Arenado wasn't producing what is expected out of the cleanup spot. Now, Contreras isn't.Basil Shabazz wrote: ↑29 May 2025 12:14 pmGenuis! Where did I say, "Bench Contreras"? Please pay closer attention. Move Contreras down to 6 for a while until he starts raking again.Basil Shabazz wrote: ↑29 May 2025 12:16 pm Also, leadership matters! Just look at the last season that Burleson had and compare it to any of the best season's Contreras has had including playing at Wrigley. You watch in the coming weeks, and you will learn that Burleson will be getting more playing time at first.ecleme22 wrote: ↑29 May 2025 08:54 amBurleson is a future in TBD. And just two weeks ago, he was a huge odd man out with Herrera at DH and Contreras at 1B.
He has his .364 since 5/14, so there's a recency bias thing going on here.
There's a reason this OP wasn't written the first 7 weeks of the season.
Willy 2017: 855 OPS 118 OPS+ 3.8 fWAR
Willy 2019: 888 OPS 127 OPS+ 3.0 fWAR
Willy 2022: 815 OPS 126 OPS+ 3.8 fWAR
Willy 2023: 826 OPS 123 OPS+ 3.3 fWAR
There's four. There are others. Your suggestion is preposterous!

Burleson had a .735 OPS and 104 OPS+ last year. Prior to this year that would have been Contreras’s 2nd worst season of his 9 year career. His worst was .730 with a 94 OPS+. The only season he had a sub .763 OPS/106 OPS+. With the Cardinals he has an .804 OPS and 121 OPS+.
