When I left St. Louis for SoCal one of my first new loves was the Thrifty brand ice cream sold at RiteAid drugstores. I had no idea that RiteAid, now with 500 locations nationwide, had acquired the Thrifty drugstore chain in 1996, so "Thrifty" meant, in my naive midwestern mind, cheap, low-quality ice cream.
Man, was I wrong!! GREAT STUFF and affordable, too, befitting the brand. For 10 years in San Diego and Encino, it became the only brand I bought, no matter what ice cream brands were on sale at Ralphs, Vons, Albertsons, Food4Less, Vallarta, etc.
Now, sadly, that may be coming to an end: https://www.latimes.com/food/story/2025 ... es-closing
Is this the end for Thrifty ice cream?
