I Can't Believe I'm Saying This
...but I would be glad to have Steven Matz back next year in his present role. He is really good at it, it's really valuable, and he's been able to stay healthy.

If he finishes out the season healthy and pitching as he has he would be great to have back.
But as you stated his “role” would likely be BP.
My guess?
Some team(s) would want him as a starter which would certainly pay more and probably suit him better.
But...if he likes St. Louis and would be ok with BP that could be great?

He’s gone. And for his new found role, he might even go to a good team missing just that piece. Like Dodgers.Cusecards wrote: ↑28 May 2025 10:03 amWas thinking the same thing yesterday!Talkin' Baseball wrote: ↑28 May 2025 09:51 am ...but I would be glad to have Steven Matz back next year in his present role. I’d be cool with signing Matz again for his current role if he’s open to it. And I’d still trade him before the deadline this year even if I intend to bring him back.

Re: I Can't Believe I'm Saying This
The way he’s throwing probably earns him a multi year deal as a reliever… I don’t know what the market will look like with only a year left on the CBA but I’d think he’s worth 2 yrs $16MM at his current rate.
I don’t see the Cards doing that on a middle reliever. That’s a luxury they can’t afford under their new payroll model.

If SM delivers the exact same stats the rest of the year, I wouldn't be surprised to see him get over $20mil, possibly a 3 year deal.An Old Friend wrote: ↑28 May 2025 10:42 amThe way he’s throwing probably earns him a multi year deal as a reliever… I don’t know what the market will look like with only a year left on the CBA but I’d think he’s worth 2 yrs $16MM at his current rate.

A 2year / 16mil deal (if Matz remains really good the rest of the year), would be something the Cards can do.
They will peel Fedde and Miko off the rotation, possibly go younger. Might be good to keep a long reliever/swingman around.

I would be really cautious with Matz on a multi year deal of any kind. So many guys perform in their contract year. We got a combination of poor performance and injury for first 3 years of his contract.
I would be interested in a multi year deal only if it had a reasonable buyout after year 1 . Better yet, one year deal with mutual option for year 2.

He could be an Andrew Miller type in his later years.

One year with a mutual option for a second year.

He would really want to stay in St. Louis for it to work.
I’d also be hesitant to offer multi year deal due to his health issues since joining the Cards.

Of course he's healthy. it's a contract year. he is always healthy in contract years....Sign him again, he's back on the IL for the remainder of the contract until the next contract year should he still be aroundTalkin' Baseball wrote: ↑28 May 2025 09:51 am ...but I would be glad to have Steven Matz back next year in his present role. Hope he keeps doing well till the deadline and they trade him. Risky business making qualifying offers to guys with injury history.Adam2 wrote: ↑28 May 2025 12:32 pmOf course he's healthy. it's a contract year. he is always healthy in contract years....Sign him again, he's back on the IL for the remainder of the contract until the next contract year should he still be aroundTalkin' Baseball wrote: ↑28 May 2025 09:51 am ...but I would be glad to have Steven Matz back next year in his present role.
