What does he have to do to get promoted? So far at Memphis this season -

IP - 22 2/3
Hits - 14
Ks - 35
BBs - 7
ERA - 1.19
WHIP - 0.926

Big right hander - 6’4”, 250 lbs. 25 years old.
Drafted in 2021 out of the U. of California - Riverside.

Would take him by far over Roycroft.

If so, they need to get him some major league experience before handing him that role.

FB/Slider combo is legit.

I've followed since the 2021 draft, and he's been underrated it seems for a while. He had a hiccup in the Texas League in April 2023, but overcame it the last 4 months to look like a legit closer for the future. He's been middle/long relief for Memphis since 2024. Closing duties are usually given to Riley O'Brien or Roycroft at Memphis.

I really want him in the BP in St. Louis...as for the closer role? You just hand that to a rookie....you have know idea how he'll respond to the majors.

Remember our reset plan. Gotta sell Hells.so this is the year to see. See who can play, endure and sustain at this level.

Fastball is in the 94-96 range, but his slider seems to be his best strike out pitch.

Has to be added to the 40 man roster first. Not sure if they can achieve that through IL transfers or does someone have to be released.

I don't mind selling Hells, I prefer to sell him. I don't hand the closer duty to a rookie who's never been in a Major League game. I meant to type "You just DON'T hand that to a rookie..."...I left out "Don't" Put him in the BP, let him earn his way there.

Slider is his best pitch.

Put him the MLB BP....don't hand him closer role. Let him earn that.

It may be because it's only 22.2 IP, and last year at AAA he had an astronomical BB-rate (5.98 BB/9), a problem he's had at every level. This year, his BB/9 is only 2.78 in those 22.2 innings, so maybe they want to give him some more innings to see if this newfound control is real or a small-sample anomaly.

Last year at AAA: 46.2 IP, 5.98 BB/9, 1.37 WHIP, 4.82 ERA, 4.85 FIP
This year at AAA: 22.2 IP, 2.78 BB/9, 0.93 WHIP, 1.19 ERA, 2.11 FIP

Throughout his minor league career, his BB-rates have been excessive (until the 22.2 innings this season). And by excessive, I mean an average of 4.97 BB/9. If he's truly gotten his BB-rate under control and stabilized, it would be a career-changer--his K-rate and BA-against already play. But hard to confidently draw that conclusion based on just 22.2 IP, especially given his track record.

Handing him the closers role would be insane.

The last time Is saw the Cardinals do that was when Whitey went w/ T. Worrell late in 1985 (and even then Whitey didn't use him as his CLOSER until his seventh appearance).

But Worrell was special and Whitey knew it.

Can't say the same for this kid and as always Duce is my guy when it comes to the kids on the farm so I'm w/him.

go with NYCardsfan's assessment, it's better than mine. Much better. Walks are a problem.

Encouraging to hear.
IF Helsley is traded before deadline:
Granillo/Romero 7th inning?, Maton/Leahy 8th inning? Matz/Graceffo 9th inning?
