Tough 2025 (5.25 ERA) but that ma just be a fluke and could keep him in BDWJr's price range.

I wonder if they'd use the Mikolas/Matz money ($30.1M) off the books this season and bring him back ($18-20M AAV?)?

(plus S. Gray's $35M falls off in end of the 2026 season)

-Libby
-Gallen

Could be a nice 1-2 at the top of the rotation!

-Mathews
-McGreevy
-Pallante

Now ur thinking. Is Gallen a league level Ace. That’s an important attribute.

2019-2024: 3.29 ERA/1.135 WHiP/9.8 SO9

He's had three Top 10 CYA seasons, two were Top 5

He's a power pitcher (aka gets the KO's)

That's nearly six years (covid season) of ACE level performance

I wonder if being a FA for the first time, ala Helsley, is messing w/both former Cardinals farmhands psyche?

Idle mind sick mind. Who knows what one thinks. Maybe they do hunk their performance is directly tied into their fortune. Maybe that bothers them.

Maybe they are stat nerds. Little changes bug them. Who knows.

I think Liberator's ceiling is better than most are willing to admit. He's finally making consistent quality starts and his command has improved by leaps and bounds. Mathews control was out of whack after a huge start but it looks like the development team has done a nice job addressing that. I know that health has to enter into the equation. But, the raw product is there. We will have some very nice material to deal with for the next few years. I'm betting it gets even better a few years down the road as we seem to be taking international opportunities more seriously. I'm hoping we pick a starter as the # 5 pick this June who might be near ready by '27.

I like our chances to raise some eyebrows...soon.
Generally, I'm with you, just on the strength of Liberatore, Pallante, and McGreevy. I'm with you on Liberatore's ceiling. I don't know what you're thinking, but I'd say he's a strong #2 right now. A strong #2 and a solid 4-5 is a good base for a rotation moving forward.

If Mathews ends up okay with the shoulder and can be that #3, that's great. And I like that Ixan Henderson has continued to pitch well this season. Definitely enough to think he'd be in the mix for a spot come 2027 if he keeps it up.

Roby, Hjerpe, and Hence? Man I hope so. Unfortunately, I'm a negative person most of the time, so I'd lean towards health just not working out for them.

But yea, good base for the rotation. Could be some decent depth. Same story as years past and not a ton of ceiling in those names, but maybe we find that guy in the upcoming draft. And with this renewed focus on modernization and development, maybe we have a better chance of getting there than in the recent past.

Would you accept Gallen as your Ace? Hes the type free agent available this off season.

I would not. I am going to assume that he is going to get paid as an ace. He'll be 30 in August, and I figure you're looking at, what, seven years? That's a lot of money for a guy who hasn't been what I would consider a consistent ace. And even with a new front office, the Cardinals are still the Cardinals, and I don't see Zac Gallen being the guy that they spend that ace type of money on.
