In the NFL, there is a saying 'on any given Sunday ' meaning a team with a poor record sometimes can upset a winning team .
Last night in the MLB, one might say 'on any given Friday ' as the Rockies stunned the Yankees with a 3-2 win.
Yes, the the 30-19 NYY visited Colorado 8-41 so a Yankees team with more than triple the wins of the Rockies bit the dust.
The better team doesn't always win. As many a little league coach or HS coach has told his team in a pregame speech.
'The experts rate our opponent as the better team this season but we just have to beat them for ONE GAME not the whole season. Today's game !
The huge underdogs go out and upset the big dog.
That's why never put too much stock in the Cardinals schedule or assume an upcoming opponent may be an easy mark. The Yankees found out last night.
Wonder what Sat. score will be between NYY and Rockies ? Regardless if it is 14-1 , the NYY can never get back last night's loss.

Tanner Gordon was a beast on the mound for the Rockies last night. The emergency starter was 0-7 lifetime and carried a AAA ERA north of 6 in 2025 but kept the Yanks at bay for 6 innings with only Judge hurting him. What a game in front of a sell-out crowd. Gotta love the variance of the sport. Onward and upward for the Rox.

Reminds me of true story of my HS alma mater football team. With one game remaining in conference schedule, Lincoln needed a win vs. the worst team that year Sheboygan North to win the conference championship outright. A loss and co-tie . North had not won a game .jcgmoi wrote: ↑24 May 2025 06:45 am Tanner Gordon was a beast on the mound for the Rockies last night. The Lincoln coaches stressed during week how this wasn't going to be easy game as it would make North's entire season to upset Lincoln to knock them out of sole conference champion. So the kids got that message from the coaches. The parents of the players were going around telling others how Lincoln would slaughter North. So the players kept hearing that message in their ear.
Sure enough . North upset Lincoln and spoiled the outright championship. Coaches knew to be wary of the game but parents underminded their message all week long. Lesson : You better be 'up' or you may get your butt kicked.

The 1967 Cardinals lost three in a row to the Astros in early June. Those Astros had the second worst record in baseball at the time in route to a 93-loss season. I wonder what that meant?

Cards in their famous 1964 run needed one win in final series against the woeful Mets to clinch the NL title. Game one, 1-0 Mets. Oops. Game two, 15-5 Mets. What? Game three to the good guys but it took Gibson going four in relief on two days rest.
