The New York Islanders have been granted permission to speak to Toronto Maple Leafs president Brendan Shanahan about an opening in their front office, sources tell Sportsnet.
Shanahan, whose contract expires on June 30, has been president of the Maple Leafs since April of 2014.
Chris Johnston of The Athletic was the first to report that the Islanders had asked Maple Leafs Sports and Entertainment, which owns the Maple Leafs, for permission to speak with Shanahan.

Yeah when they are telling you it's cool to talk to other teams, it's a pretty straightforward sign of what your future is.Spyro Gyra wrote: ↑21 May 2025 16:55 pm The New York Islanders have been granted permission to speak to Toronto Maple Leafs president Brendan Shanahan about an opening in their front office, sources tell Sportsnet.

Was permission granted to speak to the former Mrs. Craig Janney, now Mrs. Brendan Shanahan as well? Too soon?
Does anything say we really, really want you to go find work elsewhere other than the ole "granting permission to speak."
The dominos begin to fall in Toronto. Marner already speaking in past tense about his time as a Leaf. Wonky statements on X about Taveras coming back.

Re: Maple Leafs grant Islanders permission to speak to Brendan Shanahan
I can't believe Shanny lasted this long honestly. The team is just built too top heavy at forward since the Tavares signing. My money says Shanny, Marner and Tavares are gone because it's the path of least resistance. No one is asking for my opinion but I think I would move on from Matthews and try to keep Marner. Marner has more point per game in the playoffs than Matthews, (.9 compared to .86). Use the cap space to get a top pair Defenseman and a Center with some snarl to him. Bennett is the guy that comes to mind. Excluding his time in Calgary, Bennet has .83 points per game in the playoffs and gives the Leafs something they desperately need. As a side note, I don't think it will happen but I think Tavares would be a great fit for the Blues for 2-C depending on what he gets on the open market. I think the cost in dollars and years might get too high for my liking though. I wouldn't go for more than 2 years unless it was a bargain at dollars. Just my thoughts.

Would be worth re-titling this thread. MLSE have announced that they are not renewing Shanahan's contract. He's out.

In this case no, but with say NFL assistants they (grudgingly) grant permission so the coach can advance his careerGeorge Zipp wrote: ↑22 May 2025 08:47 am Was permission granted to speak to the former Mrs. Craig Janney, now Mrs. Brendan Shanahan as well? Too soon?

He failed to carry that team over the line with multiple years of a top heavy forward group.
Shanahan went for all the shiny bling.

I think he knew it was a raw deal there. He will probably get on somewhere else and win the cup there. Not saying he should stay, as someone has to take the fall. Who falls next year.dhsux wrote: ↑22 May 2025 17:49 pmAs he well should be.bluetunehead wrote: ↑22 May 2025 15:20 pm Would be worth re-titling this thread.
