Oilers look bad

Post by Lloyd Braun »

Man, that was a brutally bad collapse. Oilers might have the worst penalty kill of any team in conference final history. Just awful this entire playoff. They lack discipline and pay no attention to detail.

Draisaitl with an embarrassing turnover on the Seguin breakaway goal was a bad look for a supposed superstar.

Their goaltending was awful and untimely, as is the norm for Edmonton.

They have a lot of top-end offensive talent. But they don't have the defense, goaltending, discipline or killer instinct needed to win championships.

Looks like another wasted season of McDavid and Draisaitl.

If you are an Oiler fan, you must want to hand yourself in embarrassment right now.

McDavid could quite possibly be the best overall skilled player to play in the history of the game as of yet. Benn is a better Captain.
No question, McDavid and Draisaitl are very dangerous opponents, tough to defend. Edmonton just does not have enough balance in their lineup beyond those two.
I know he is still young, but Broberg could have really helped that D from their collapse. Dallas forwards just swarmed and overwhelmed them.
Does anyone know if there is any video of what Benn may have said in the locker room after the 2nd period to positively inspire his teammates?

well i am no oiler fan, but , this feels like a bleedr troll job lolol. bc the oilers were the better team 5 v 5. it is a tough pill to swallow though losing a 3-1 lead into the 3rd.... not something the panthers would do thats for sure.

It took two ill-timed penalties from chronically dirty players, Corey Perry and Evander Kane, to boost the Stars beyond the momentum already generated by a quick goal to open the 3rd period. I told my wife between the 2nd and 3rd periods those two are certainly skilled, but they can also cost you a game with their dirty play....and they got burned.

How great, despite my disappointment at the final score, to hear such a terrific broadcast team in Sean McDonough, Ray Ferraro, and the sharp, energetic Emily Kaplan, whom I just adore. Many fans forget just how good a player Ferraro was....more than 400 NHL goals. When he gets really wound up in his commentary, he can sometimes sound like Matt Foley, Chris Farley's "motivational speaker" living in a van down by the river!!. :D

Here's Emily Kaplan's twin brother; you can't help but see the resemblance: https://tinyurl.com/2n2u6s7b

Whenever a team comes from behind to win, it's always traced to something said on the bench or in the room, but break it down to brass tacks, and the only difference between the 2nd and 3rd periods for the Stars was that their shots finally found the net. Whenever a goal is scored, broadcasters and coaches diagnose the play to within an inch of its life to explain what made it a scoring play, when if you had stopped the video a split second before the shot, nothing was better on this play than on any before. The puck just simply found a hole somewhere within 24 square feet that it hadn't before and might not again.

This is one reason why power plays drive me mental. They suddenly drop the speed of the game down to a crawl; play constant tic-tac-toe with the puck around the perimeter in pursuit of the perfect shooting angle, enabling PKs to clog up the passing lanes. I always despised every cell in Mike Keenan's body and mind, but I believe he had one thing right: He often refused to even practice the PP, telling his players "Pressure the puck! Pressure the puck!" which, at full (normal even strength) speed, eventually catches the PK'ers shorthanded with an open shooter or rebound-picker.

Maybe it's time I opted to coach a kids' team just to see how that might work (or not). 8)

How did I miss this? I love Chris Farley and Phil Hartman, and I never saw "in a van down by the river". BluesTalk is such an educational venue. Thanks to Pink Freud for today's lesson,

That was the series opener on the road for the Oilers, I wouldn't read too much into it. They came out strong and controlled the Stars for two periods. I don't think the Oilers changed as much as Dallas. The Stars got the early PP goal to make it a one-hoal game and amp up the adrenaline and fans, their intensity level spiked. The Oiler penalties took McDavid and Draisaitl out of the game and threw them into catchup mode.

The Oilers need to examine how they unraveled on the PK and drew the penalties, put this behind them and do it again. The Stars probably left feeling like they just have to show up on time.

This should be a real entertaining series.

I agree on the broadcast, that team is good. ESPN so rarely does things right it's almost shocking.

I thought for sure that Dallas weren’t going to be able to hang with the oilers, after the first 2 periods. Kudos to them for finding a way.

If memory serves, we lost 6-3 in game 1 in San Jose, so yeah, a long way to go

Except for the bad giveaway by Drai that led to Seguin's goal, I thought the Oil were the better team 5v5 through 40 minutes. But when you take penalties against good teams, they make you pay. And wow did the Oil pay in the first six minutes of the 3rd period!!

I've always thought that penalties can arise from 1 player's bad temper and discipline, but more often, they arise when one team is faster and stronger. The weaker team grows tired and frustrated with the better team, and penalties are taken to try to catch up. It's like JV versus varsity. JV will always foul more.

It will be interesting to see if the Oilers penalties are chronic.

Ferraro's great. Goes well with McDonough.

Kaplan...for me...not so much.

Can’t remember all of em but the Perry penalty that lead to the game tying goal was just dumb. Standing in the slot with o-zone possession and he cross checks a guy in the face.
