Binnington Propels Himself To Canada's Premier Goalie Role

Post by Spyro Gyra »

STOCKHOLM, SWEDEN - Canada loves its goalies.

There has been no shortage of legendary Canadian goalies, including Patrick Roy, Martin Brodeur, Roberto Luongo, Carey Price and Marc-Andre Fleury.

To be the premier goalie of Team Canada is an honor that not many get to experience, and Jordan Binnington has propelled himself to that position at the 4 Nations Face-Off and 2025 IIHF World Championship.

Binnington burst onto the scene in 2019 when he came into the playoffs relatively unknown, but he helped the St. Louis Blues capture a Stanley Cup as their starting goalie.

Since then, Binnington has served as the team's primary starter in net.

While the 31-year-old's consistency has been through some ups and downs throughout his career, one thing has remained a constant in his play: his ability to rise up in the biggest moments and games.

To be fair, this is the weakest Canadian goaltending has ever been in history

It only takes ONE, as Binner proved.

That's why scoring is up in the NHL. Shortage of great goalies in the league. Even supposedly the best goalie in the league is full of holes come playoff time.

Doesn’t change much about the weakness at the position. There are better goaltenders/pools playing for other nations.

It’s Canada’s biggest weakness right now

And it is Hockey Canada's fault. Kids are developing through the ranks, but when key development kicks in (15+) the major junior teams are giving those spots to Russians, Swedes, etc, so Canadian boys stall in their development.

It's hilarious that anyone would try to belittle this. Binner wins. He has proven to have that "clutch gene." If you get to call yourself the best at your position or your job or whatever you want in your entire country, I think that's quite the compliment. The fact that Binner has legitimate GOAT status for however many years in the hockey history books is a wild accomplishment by any player.

Consider the idiocy of the only "thing" belittling him in this thread.

no doubt, having a troll bot try and belittle the best player at their position in their country is a new one. But what do you expect from a bot who isn't a blues fan but continues to swamp a blues page with troll juice.

Belittle what? He deserves credit for turning it around and making some key saves. It’s not like he has been prolific for Team Canada though. His history with Canada before the last couple games, was quite bad actually

I don't believe people have come to grips with how gigantic the Olympic tournament will be next year. It's been what, 12 years since the last one with the best players in the world? The 4 Nations tourney was great, but we're talking about the Olympics. The whole world will be watching, including people that are not big hockey fans. Remember the Oshie drama with the shootout 12 years ago?

Binner has earned the right to be in the conversation to be Canada's #1. No one knows how things will look in 9 months (injuries, etc.), but the Binnington story get even bigger.

I just loved how Cooper stuck with him for the pay off.

He knew.
