Tool: Live In The Sand
Tool just put on this destination concert in the Dominican Republic, scheduled to play for two nights, and apparently they advertised two unique sets.
But the band ended up playing several of the same songs in both sets. Fans who shelled out 5k are (upset). And apparently Maynard was snarky about it, asking people “who all was here last night?” The festival was all-inclusive, so obviously everyone was.
I did not go, but thought it might be cool. The lineup beyond them was great. (See below) But for this kind of event, it’s a reasonable assumption that both sets will be unique. And again, apparently that’s what was advertised, but I didn’t pay too much attention at the time. Furthermore, a lot of the complaints are that it’s the same set lists that they’ve been touring with for probably around 5-10 years. How about some other tracks? Yes, part of that is the AV production, but at the same time, I don’t think fans would care if they dumbed that down a bit for older songs they haven’t played in a while.
People have been complaining about Tool selling out for sometime. Look at their merch game. Re-releasing the Undertow CD for 250 bucks with no unique music content, just new art, was one thing folks have been pointing to recently.

Looks like the kind of show a single aging hipster libertarian dolt would find appealing.

It might be a little easier to take if "Jambi" and "Rosetta Stoned" weren't both 10+ minutes long. I don't think anyone would have minded hearing "Prison Sex" or "Sober" twice.

Also hard to stomach when they only play 10 songs.Dicktar2023 wrote: ↑11 Mar 2025 12:41 pm It might be a little easier to take if "Jambi" and "Rosetta Stoned" weren't both 10+ minutes long. I don't think anyone would have minded hearing "Prison Sex" or "Sober" twice.
So many songs they could have played:
Sober
Prison sex
The pot
46 and 2
Eulogy
Parabola
Many other good options of course
Re: Tool: Live In The Sand
Never heard the term "Yacht Rock" until today. So I googled it, and saw that it primarily refers to a lot of popular soft FM AOR hits from the mid to late 70's. Most of the lists of songs assigned to this genre are NOT some of my favorites - a lot of overplayed schlock which hastened my escape into music by Television, Elvis Costello, Buzzcocks, and the Undertones in the late 70's. It does disturb me that the one of the greatest American bands of the 70's: Steely Dan - is included in this genre. It seems to me that the great majority of listeners did not hear much of the Dan's early masterpieces. Can't Buy a Thrill, Countdown to Ecstasy, Pretzel Logic, and Katy Lied are enormous, groundbreaking, and totally unique albums. Even The Royal Scam is mostly fantastic. Aja went a bit too technically perfect to the point of sterility for me, and it seems to be the LP that is most associated with the "Yacht Rock" genre.
It hurts my soul to see Steely Dan categorized with such easy listening dreck as Chris Cross, Kenny Loggins, Orleans, and the Little River Band. Folks need to listen to "Fire in the Hole", "Change of the Guard", "Kings", "Razor Boy","My Old School","Rose Darling", Doctor Wu", and the entire Pretzel Logic LP.

Agree with both of you, if they had more cuts from the first three albums, maybe even repeats, probably fewer complaints. I know my opinion doesn’t matter much, because I didn’t go, but I would think Sober and Prison Sex were must-plays. These are your hard-core fans going to this. They probably want to hear older songs and the main hits.lordoffatness wrote: ↑11 Mar 2025 20:09 pmAlso hard to stomach when they only play 10 songs.Dicktar2023 wrote: ↑11 Mar 2025 12:41 pm It might be a little easier to take if "Jambi" and "Rosetta Stoned" weren't both 10+ minutes long. But Maynard is on record saying he can’t sing a lot of those songs anymore, at least not for the majority of the set. With his age, it’s obvious he wouldn’t be able to belt out the same screams, but I think he could still do something. Maybe he’s self-conscious about that.
Anyway, there was another rumor that the reason for repeated songs was due to the stage management company, and its errors with sound. I also saw some news about a class action lawsuit, which is silly.
To be technical about it, they were unique sets in that they were different in some way. But mutually exclusive would have been the way to go here, IMO.

Re: Tool: Live In The Sand
I'd say the most disappoint part of it (I didn't go) was the set list. How can you essentially play the same set list with a change of only 2 songs?
Yeah you don't have an extensive discography, but you have more than enough songs to not play the same ones on two separate nights.
If he can't sign them like he used to, just use backing vocals like many bands do. Hell they do it already when they play the Grudge and it gets to his scream section.
I get it, he's turning 61 this year so yes the vocals aren't what they used to be, but that's simply a terrible excuse for not playing those songs.

Love Tool, but I think it's pretty lame to have fans pay a ton of money and then play a "unique set" with mostly the same songs. Come on, Metallica did an entire no repeat weekend tour.

Kind of like Joel, Shady and others like them in Cards Talk.
On topic, if it weren't for work, finances, kids, I would love to see Tool live.
Alas, in my almost 50 years, I've never been to a concert. Unless you count going to my own, siblings, kids in school.
Also, unless you count "Sesame Street: Live" in the early 90s that we got free tickets to because we had a subscription to "Sesame Street Magazine", for my younger brother. At the old Arena. Our seats were actually on the ice. Just a sheet of plywood on top of it.

Just a reminder that Tool still sucks. Moron music.
