Completely depends on who the shooter / goalie are.
That said teams train to kill PP's. Of course goalies and players train somewhat on breakaways / shootouts too but you have nobody to bail you out if you make a mistake in that situation.
For better or worse a shootout takes no time off the clock. So scoreboard and time left have somewhat of a factor too.

Yeah, I have been saying there should be a shot clock on the penalty/shootout shots. That way it simulates a breakaway in game action.....when a defenseman is trying to catch up to you.Red7 wrote: ↑18 May 2025 16:56 pm Penalty shots (and shoot out attempts) are much different today than say 20-30 years ago. Back then you were limited to one move or deke and then you had to shoot. It’s not like today where you can make multiple moves, order a Starbucks, watch a Facebook meme before shooting.

I would rather have the penalty shot. However I want to stress that I realize this is situational. If Connor Hellabyck is my goaltender, that might be different. However if you have faith in your goalie, I think you have faith that he will stop the puck against most opponents. With a man advantage, you lose time and you defend against their best. With a penalty shot this isn't always the case at all.

Another one of those rare excellent posts/questions. This time by Red7 . Thank you. I would add things to consider like time remaining, how tired/beat is the other team and of coarse, is the goalie Jordan Binnington.

If I were the BLUES and it was near the end of a period and definitely end of game and we would then be 4 on 6 (let alone 5 on 6), then I would hope for the other team being awarded a Penalty Shot.
