MLB.com power rankings (May 12th)

Post by Hooking »

1. Dodgers (Previously 1)
2. Padres (Previously 4)
3. Tigers (Previously 5)
4. Mets (Previously 2)
5. Cubs (Previously 3)
...
17. Cardinals (Previously 23)

Never understood power rankings. Aren't they supposed to be about who is hot in addition to where they are in the standings? Unlike actual standings it is all about recency bias?

Cards are on an 8 game win streak and 1 game behind the team in 5th place for the division lead but there is a 12 slot gap between the two teams?

Does it say what date range is used to compile the data? Maybe they're a week behind? If not, they clearly don't believe what the Cards are doing as sustainable.

Big series tonight to see if this win streak's legit or just a bunch of smoke.

7 of the 8 games were against the Pirates and Nationals.

I'd save the complaining for if they beat good teams and are still ranked low.

Not entirely on records. Otherwise, you wouldn't need to read power ranking clicks. It's people like us looking at the teams, strength of schedule and their rosters, and putting together, in their opinion, their own selected power rankings. Not science, but our reading their clicks helps them pay the bills.

Yes it is for up until this point in the season.

I realize it comes off as kind of complaining but it is not. It is more of "How does this make sense?" I guess the Cubs have played more games against teams over .500 so yeah like you are saying I guess. It's not like they didn't face some great pitching in this timeframe.

Still though, power rankings are all about what teams have done recently and how good they have been in the past couple weeks - in conjunction with where they are in the standings. 12 place gap between two teams that are 1 game apart? I don't care who you are, that does not make sense to me.

Power rankings are about as meaningful as hookers who claim they're virgins.

That ranking is for entire season.

It's spot on.

Cards are 8-11 against plus .500 teams

14-8 against teams below .500

The rankings are interesting.
They are crediting VSII as the primary reason we jumped so high, while also noting that Gorman and Walker continue to be walking bummers.

"The Cardinals everyday center fielder, who stole 94 bases in the Minors two years ago, is getting on base at a .357 clip, has 11 stolen bases and currently has an 11-game hitting streak. And he’s playing a brilliant center field. His mad dash to home last week to score from first on a single is already one of the Cardinals’ signature highlights of the season. He’s a primary reason the Cardinals have won eight in a row."

Nah. If it was just about standings and records they have standings and records for that.

It's arbitrary and recency bias and definitely about popularity. It's the only way a team with 1 less win than another team would be 12 spots below them and even lower than teams with worse records.

Not true. The first 2 wins were part of a double header vs Mets. And now we can add a win vs Phillies. Six in the middle were Pirates and Wash…. Wash, by the way hadn’t been swept by anyone until us and we did it at their home. We don’t need to downgrade the accomplishment.

Those voting/making the selections were certain that the home team was destined for last place. These selections are "What are teams doing NOW by record and they have the12th best record but 17th in the eyes of these prognosticators. 17th says that the detractors admit that they were Somewhat incorrect but refuse to totally admit it and likewise removes Some of the negative speech but not enough for these folks to admit that they were wrong......in their eyes. Who was giving them a pass when they were not winning? Nobody. They were throwing dirt before the season started because they did not trade away key assets which would only help fuel more negative assertions
