Victor Scott is Mr. Clutch
VS2 got his 18th RBI on the season today, which is 4th on the team in RBI (2 ahead of Arenado, our 4th hitter) despite hitting almost exclusively in the 8th and 9th spots.
He’s hitting .345 with RISP (1.122 OPS) and .333 with men on base (.934 OPS)
Late and close he’s hitting .389 (1.040 OPS) and in tie games he’s hitting .452 (1.095 OPS)
In high leverage situations he’s hitting .368 with a 1.112 OPS and hitting .333 with an .810 OPS in medium leverage situations.

What I like too is that he generally puts the ball in play. He does look bad now and then on a K, but it has become rare, and he doesn't carry it to the next AB. He takes what he is given, often going the opposite way. He rarely swings for the fences, but understands how he can be an effective hitter. It has been really fun to watch him grow as player, and he most definitely belongs here. It will be interesting to see how he comes out of a slump. He will have one. Only guys like Albert could avoid them. Like everyone else, color me impressed with this kid! He has grabbed CF and solidified the lineup by doing so!Futuregm2 wrote: ↑11 May 2025 21:55 pm VS2 got his 18th RBI on the season today, which is 4th on the team in RBI (2 ahead of Arenado, our 4th hitter) despite hitting almost exclusively in the 8th and 9th spots.

He’s certainly exceeded expectations so far. Kid will be a dangerous player and a nightmare on the base path if he continues to progress like this.

Certainly one of my top 2 or 3 as well. He is next in the long line of Cardinal speedy OFers. He also understands that his job is get on base. He has a little pop in his bat, but doesn't sell out for that. No, I am not saying he is the next Lou Brock, but the thing about Lou was that he hit 149 homers, but he also had 3000+ hits and a lifetime .293 avg and stole 938 bases. That is the sort of player that VSII needs to try and be (and NO I am not saying he is the next Brock). Bader is an example of a guy who, because he had some pop, thought he should hit 20+ dingers every year instead of just get on base. He had no two strike approach. Bader was really fast and I remember him scoring from first or making a grab in CF that few could get to. But he failed to get on base enough to use that speed. He could bunt, but VSII is a better bunter I think. Vince Coleman was another guy who knew what his role was. Get on base and use that speed. VSII is the next one of those guys we have been waiting to watch. He has developed very quickly. Let's see if he can keep it up. We all love that guy, especially if he is a CFer. I grew up in the Curt Flood era. The Cards have had some fine CFers in my lifetime. Maybe, just maybe, VSII is the next one of note.

No, we don't need to say he is the next Lou Brock. I grew up watching 1970s baseball. Brock and Simmons were my favorite players. But, lets face it, it is hard to not think Lou Brock when watching Scott. The similarities are there except Scott is a much better OF. The way he is hitting is exactly the way Brock hit, take what is given to you, whether a bunt, opposite field single or power if the opportunity is there. The kid has a long way to go to round out his game like Brock did, but, there is no reason why he can't. I am not predicting he will join the 3000 hit club. The game has changed. But, given where this guy was last year and what he is doing now, wow. He has been a line-up changing difference maker. Probably has added 2-3 wins to the team by lengthening the line-up and manufacturing runs.bccardsfan wrote: ↑12 May 2025 01:10 amCertainly one of my top 2 or 3 as well. Trying not to get too excited (the league will almost certainly adjust)... but really starting to look like he's the real deal.

I think Scott will be able to adjust as well. Even last year when it was clear that he was overmatched when he was initially called up (which shouldn't have happened, but that is beside the point), he had like a .274 OPS. When he got the call again in August he ended up hitting a respectable .244 .278 .384 .661. That's a pretty good adjustment right there.
And then to see what he did on both offense and defense in the offseason to improve the way he has this year is very impressive. I hope I don't curse the guy, but he seems like a very smart player who will be able to learn from and adjust to the league adjusting to him.
I know Gorman and Walker aren't working out the way we thought they would so far, but having a foundation of talent with Winn at SS, Scott in CF, Donovan at 2B, Nootbaar in the OF, and Herrera at catcher or DH is pretty nice for the future if we can get it together soon.

FWIW based on the other thread I'm starting to think Herrera would be a good future LF if Walker doesn't work out.

Would be nice to have a true real clutch hitter defined from back in the day.Futuregm2 wrote: ↑11 May 2025 21:55 pm VS2 got his 18th RBI on the season today, which is 4th on the team in RBI (2 ahead of Arenado, our 4th hitter) despite hitting almost exclusively in the 8th and 9th spots.

Quickly becoming one of my favorites, his play takes me back to the Whitey Ball days!Futuregm2 wrote: ↑11 May 2025 21:55 pm VS2 got his 18th RBI on the season today, which is 4th on the team in RBI (2 ahead of Arenado, our 4th hitter) despite hitting almost exclusively in the 8th and 9th spots.

Good young core (Winn, VSII, Hererra, should be Saggese w/more on the way like JJ) + youngish veterans (Noot, Donny) and grizzled vets (NADO, WillyC).
Find that true MOTO hitter (30+ HR/100+ RBI's) this offseason (I know, tough but it can happen re: Goldy) and this team could become a serious contender sooner than many thought under Bloom & Co.

Re: Victor Scott is Mr. Clutch
I am a wee bit older than you and saw Gibson in 64 (I was 7), 67, and 68. He was king, along with Lou, and Tim McCarver. Never thought any catcher would replace Tim in my young fan's world, but Simba became my new favourite pretty fast. Many of us are used to having that fast guy in the OF, who was a base stealer and good all around player. Yeah, Lou wasn't a great LFer.... but he excelled at the rest of the game. Bader teased us, but he just couldn't pan out. We need VSII to pan out:) So far so good! Now we just need to find the next Albert..... yeah sure..... At least we all got to see him. My Dad had Stan, and I had Albert. We both had Lou. Let's hope Scott is the real deal for the long haul.ICCFIM2 wrote: ↑12 May 2025 06:04 amNo, we don't need to say he is the next Lou Brock. Re: Victor Scott is Mr. Clutch
Vic is becoming my favorite player on this team. The kid's an all around gamer. He can go pick it in the grass, he can hit the ball with authority and he can get from first to home in 10 seconds (WOW). He can do a lot of things to help the team win, even if he's struggling at the plate. Plus, he's got a good amount of swagger--but not so much that I'd hate him if he were anywhere else.
Great attitude, too. This guy was probably 3rd on the depth chart for CF to start the year, but he's come up and grabbed the bull by the horns. Show me a player who'll do that, and I'll show you a winner. I think it also shows a lot that after being extremely overmatched at this point last year in the majors, that he put the rubber to the road and has made himself into a fine ballplayer.
