Would you consider?

Post by Melville »

If you were POBO for STL would you consider a trade with Boston built around N/A and Devers?
Devers is actually quite affordable since he las a large sum of money deferred in each year of his contract.
Paired with Arenado, he would give STL a formidable middle order presence which they currently lack.
And from a business perspective, it would help bring fans back to the ballpark.
The potential fit is there.
Something along the lines of N/A, Mootbaar, Pozo, and Mikolas for Devers and Jhostynxon Garica.
Bottom line:
If you could add Devers' bat to the STL lineup for the next 8 years at little meaningful roster loss, would you?

1B :D :D

But really it’s interesting to look at a possible Nado/Devers deal. But, I don’t want to give up Nootbaar.

Devers has led the league in errors for 7 straight years at 3B. Going from Nado defensively to Devers is going to be a wake up call to fans. Of course it also will be a wake up call when Devers steps up to the plate and can actually hit at an All-Star level, as Nado hasn’t done that since 2022.

The same approach STL is taking in 2025.
Primarily DH and some turns at 3B.
With Donovan moving to LF, there would be plenty of PA's to go around.
This year is an active experiment.
Devers could become a permanent DH next year - a role he does not appear to object to.
If that were the case, someone would become an expendable trade piece in the off-season - likely Burleson.

My scenario was just an example.
Boston needs an outfielder - and Mootbaar is far more expendable than Scott or Donovan.
Burleson could be a possibility - LF in Fenway has long been a place to stash less-than-elite defenders.

RD would certainly lengthen the Cards lineup. I'm not crazy about adding another bat-only player to the roster, although he could be the clean-up hitter we sorely miss today. Interesting premise. I'd listen to an offer from Craig Breslow.

I don't understand OP. Talks about Devers and Arenado giving us a strong middle of the lineup. Then offers Arenado in the trade package.

Yes a mis- type I bet. I think arenado goes in this scenerio. We would score more runs but what would Devers do to our pitching.

I’m guessing he meant Contreras.

How would they be in the same lineup?

His affordability should, IMO, be measured vs what a DH may receive, not an all-star 3B.
As a DH, is Devers a player that you commit to for 8 plus seasons at $30 million over another DH that
you don't need such a commitment to? His bat is good.

Compared to other DH's near the top 10 in their positions RD is paid at or near the top.
Schwarber $80/4, Ozuna $65/4, Yellich $210/9, Rooker $60/5.

Cards need a bat true. They also do not have too many OFers something your proposal makes worse
unless Walker is good. We'll see.

Boston is the team with the issues and a player being paid full market value. IF they think NA is an answer
at 1B fine, Does NA say yes if Devers is leaving Boston? The others are throw ins so you did get rid of them.

So NO, to a $300 million DH that may or may not fit a team. A $400 million OFer makes more sense to me.
Neither are happening.

I would want to know more about Devers personality before making a deal for him .
He was a poor 3B . He griped quite a bit at the thought of moving positions to 1st . The team agreed to put him at DH and hang up his glove.
Now with the loss of their 1st baseman the GM approached him about playing 1st and Devers balked citing he already changed positions and getting use to the DH and now they want a 2nd move.

Unless you are in the Boston clubhouse , you don't know how his teammates truly react to his stubborness to move to 1st now due to this season ending injury of a teammate . Most MLB players (at least publicly ) will state they will do anything to help their team . They move positions etc.
Devers is not.
I would want to find out from sources inside the Boston clubhouse how his refusing to consider 1st base is being received by his teammates.
Are they supportive ? Are they ticked at him ?
If it's the latter , the Cardinals could have issues on their hands if they acquired him . No doubt he is a tremendous hitter . Would he be toxic to have on the team ?

I noticed the manager is staying silent (at least for now ) . Cora knows it's a ticklish situation and won't weigh in on this . It's the GM and Devers deal so (for now ) he(cora )is being mum on it .

Never fails.

Mel once again trying to get rid of our best all round OF'er by throwing Noot into this deal.

And I'm so sure BDWJr would immediately signoff on absorbing Devers' 10 year, $313,500,000 contract ($42M deferred) that has eight yrs remaining on it.

Take Noot out and replace w/J. Walker plus BoSox send $40M ($5M/yr for remaining eight yrs) and sure I'd do it.

If not, then Huge PASS!

Heck no. Devers is a “GOOD” player, but not the “RIGHT” player. Have we not learned that stats are not the total sum of a player’s worth regarding winning and losing. We finally have a group of team players that are enjoyable to watch. Let’s stick to the course we set out on.

Not a bad take. Especially the group of team players part.
