I am confused, is grass smeller saying there is an Ovi type player available this year?
When I say Ovechkin, I mean a superstar talent. Most teams have 1 or even multiple, just not the Blues. We've not had one in a long time. Remember Brett Hull? That's why in these parts, people have a difficult time following me. It's hard for people to envision an indoor toilet when you been sitting on a wooden board your whole adult life..
As far as if one is available this year... they say that 1 or 2 is available at the top.
So if most teams have 1 and some have 2…you think there’s 45ish superstars in the league?
There’s simply aren’t many Ovechkin caliber of players that come around. I like both Schaefer and Misa in this draft but neither is anywhere near the same stratosphere in terms of hype as Ovie was back in 2004.
Ovie is just a horrible example if what you’re really talking about is a standard star player. Which the Blues have one of - Robert Thomas.
I realize that Ovechkin is one of a kind, etc. A guy can dream around here, can't he? I have relatives in Washington, and after hearing their happiness for 20 solid years, can you blame me for wanting that?
A more realistic superstar is somebody that sticks in the NHL Top 50 for 5+ years.
Currently, the Blues have ZERO players in the TOP50. I'm just not convinced that Thomas will ever be there.

Thomas just finished with 81 pts in 70 games. More points than Matthews, Barkov, Ovechkin, Stutzle, Larkin, Hischier, Jack Hughes etc.
Only 9 players in the entire league scored more pts/game than him. He scored at a higher pace than all of the above as well as M.Tkachuk, Nylander, Suzuki, Panarin, Rantanen, Scheifele…what the $&#% are you talking about he’s not a top 50 player in the league and won’t ever get there??

What happened to Thomas in Winnipeg? He was -5 up there.
Remember what the great Hockey Man Doug Armstrong said in early February about our team?
"Our best players are not consistent. They don't score every night... Their best players are better than our best players" Army is right.

No that's just laughably wrong.

Thomas and Kyrou are not on there.
I 100% guarantee that Thomas will absolutely be in the top 50 this year. Its laughable you don't think he is.
Thomas was 11th in PPG in the NHL and off the 11 players he’s 5th in plus minus. Not sure about every player in the NHL but I’d struggle to name 15 centres I’d rather over Thomas. I think he’s close to the top ten and is still 25.

Why are his numbers at Winnipeg the only ones that matter? Did he not play at Enterprise?
Getting shut down in another teams barn in the playoffs is not uncommon and has no bearing on a players overall body of work.
He will absolutely be in the top 50 and likely top 25

Rantanen just scored 3 in Winnipeg, against the same weak goalie. Thomas scored 0 in Game 7.
The best players show up every night. That's what Hockey Savant Doug Armstrong says. He also said that our best guys were absent some nights is what sent him into his early Feb hissy fit.
Thomas Stats in January
1/11 - 1/31
8 Games; 6 Losses 2 Wins
1G 2A

Thomas Stats in January
1/11 - 1/31
8 Games; 6 Losses 2 Wins
1G 2A
8 pts in 7 playoff games while getting 20:59 of ice time
If you want to use arbitrary cut off dates let's do this one.
Feb 1-April 15th
30 games 9-36-45 1.5ppg
Led the league in scoring after the 4 Nations tournament
so let's really get it down to the nitty gritty:
After the 4 nations 17-4-26-30 1.76 gpg
Not that it should matter since hockey is a team game and one center is not a determining factor at all if a team wins or loses but since you brought it up
21-9 including a 12 game winning streak
That's a top 50 player if I've ever seen one. In fact I'd say that's a top 10 center in the league

Thomas is certainly in the current top 50 and his profile is rising. He will likely be on the Canadian Olympic team next year which will cement his place on these kinds of lists for many years.

I think Binnington, Parayko and Thomas are all locks for the Canadian Olympic Team Holloway a possibility. Broberg to Sweden. Depending on their starts next year, Snuggerud could be in the mix and (depending on need / injuries) Fowler could be in the mix as well for Team USA. Fair to say that his move to the Blues has rejuvenated his career. He had a monster playoffs.
All of this makes it hyper critical to land a solid 2C - to ease back on Thomas' minutes after the Olympics. I can see the Blues do the same thing next year that they did with Binner this year after 4Nations - leaning on Hofer more to rest Binner for playoffs. A legit 2C allows the Blues to ease up on Thomas' minutes.
Of course while it was thrilling, no one wants to have to reel off 13 in a row to make the playoffs next year!
The absence of Holloway certainly hurt Thomas in the playoffs. With Holloway out, the second line was nowhere near the threat they were when he was playing. The Jets, especially at home with the last change, could focus on shutting down the first line since the threat from the other lines fell off significantly.
