Hockey trade

Post by Pierre McGuire »

Two main areas of need..RHD and possibly another center. This is just for discussion and no way am I saying we should trade Kyrou. Obviously I’m on record as stating that I would only move him for Brady. With that said, knowing what we have in Holloway and what we think we have with Snuggerud, and eventually Dvorsky

Thoughts on a pure hockey trade
Kyrou to the Kings for RHD Brandt Clarke and draft picks.

Any other suggestions for a pure hockey trade, let’s hear them.

Snuggerud looked fantastic in the playoffs but no way am I moving top scoring until I see him and Dvo do something for a full season, esp for a d man

Don’t see why LA would be willing to trade away Clarke, especially with Doughty nearing retirement but who knows.

To me, I’d try to trade away Faulk. Probably not for much but he’s not worthless. Then sign righties like Fabbro and Hamonic to be the 2RD and 3RD. Keep Kessel in the org as a spare guy.

Maybe try to move Leddy but that depends on if he was playing injured or not IMO. If he can recover and be decent again, I have no issue keeping him. If this is who he is now, then he’s not worth close to $4M/year anymore. I think Tucker has another level he can get to and be a solid #5-7 guy for us for years. But will admit, with his poor skating already, I’m hoping he didn’t suffer a bad knee injury as that certainly won’t help. Suter or some other cheap vet could also be had to round out the group of 7.

The money saved on Faulk and maybe Leddy as well could then be spent on a 2C. Maybe even just a stop-gap one like a one year deal to Claude Giroux? Idk, I need to look at the UFA and RFA market more. And any other players rumored to be available.

Would be nice to upgrade a bit on Joseph/Texier as well but if we bring in a 2C and/or Dvorsky makes a push and earns the 3C role, then we’d have Schenn and Sunny likely pushed to the wings, which would in turn basically remove the need for Joseph and Tex.

But by and large, the two main areas of need IMO are RD and 2C.

We could offer sheet Bouchard from EDM for 11.5M give up the 4 1st...

Cam, CP55
Broberg, Bouchard
Tucker, Kessel
Quinton Burns (he brings some grit)

Trade Faulk and Leddy.

I'd rather get Nemec from Devils. They are overcrowded with dmen and that's prior to them potentially getting Quinn some day.

Nemec and Mercer (can play center until Dvorsky ready) for Kyrou and Toropchenko (yes don't want to lose him but have other prospects coming that can play 4th lline)

Brainstorming with a player that has been brought up in lots of trades. Not saying I'm necessarily advocating for this as it's very risky, but also has a big upside (similar to the Captials acquiring Pierre-Luc Dubois), and this player also has a NMC starting on July 1st. That player is Elias Pettersson.

He had a down year, and a bad second half of 2024 as well, with clear decline in skating speed and shot power. Is it just an injury that once recovered from you have a potential #1C (or a 1A/1B situation with him and Thomas)? That's the risk and reward of this option. You take on a player in decline who is owed $11.6M for the next seven seasons, but you might also have a(nother) franchise center who is only 26.5 years old. It' gives you the ability to keep growing with the young players (mostly wingers) while also making a move to increase the odds of a deep playoff run in the next two years while Binner is still under contract (and in his early 30s) . . . if he rebounds. You could also be tying a boat anchor to your payroll for the foreseeable future for an often injured middle six center . . . if he doesn't rebound.

What parts of Broberg’s game do you prefer?

I wouldn't do that deal. Snuggy is going to be elite. But what's wrong with having 2 elite Right Wingers?

You win with goals.

Army will give the D the lifts it needs but without the need of doing a block buster deal.

Power might be slightly better than Broberg but not a Kyrou added to the package level of better.

Doubt NJ would trade Mercer for Kyrou straight up. And then their best prospect for a 4th line winger? No.

There’s zero chance odds Burns is the #7 d-man. For one, he won’t be ready. He’ll be a rookie pro. Probably our 3rd pairing d-man in Springfield. Secondly, you don’t put a rookie as your #7 guy. He needs to play. Learn to be a pro. Needs to play a lot to learn the pro game. He can’t do that sitting in the press box most nights.

Younger, much more accomplished, higher ceiling and just wayy better size/reach.

I don’t like Broberg’s softness at all. When/if he becomes a core player, he’s going to need to bulk up/protect himself.

Broberg didn’t play soft this series but I’m sure not playing in a Stanley cup final this year will give him a couple more months of training vs last year.

You know very little about hockey if you doubt NJ would trade Mercer for Kyrou straight up...
