Not in the same league as say needing only one more strike not once, but twice to win the World Series and failing, but the fact the Blues should have won Game 1 then stopped playing AND then doing it again Game 7...Blues just are not a fundamentally sound team, and that is normally a coaching issue, but how many more coaches do we need to can before we start looking at the players; Kyrou and Faulk, the supposed leaders, need to go for starters, then clean up the D and build a winning culture. Blues are still playing like that team just happy to be there and the fans are still acting the same way.

Yeah...I don't get that mentality - they're spending to the salary cap limit - the goal at minimum is to get to the playoffs when you invest that much into the team.smilinjoefission wrote: ↑05 May 2025 09:33 am Blues are still playing like that team just happy to be there and the fans are still acting the same way.

On May 14, 2013 the Boston Bruins were down 4-2 to the Toronto Maple Leafs with 1:22 left to go in game 7.
They then scored 2 goals in under 30 seconds to tie the game with 50 seconds left to send it to OT.
The Bruins then scored the OT winner in the first OT at the 6:05 second mark.
What happened to the Blues isn't even remotely unprecedented, it just hadn't happened to us before in a playoff setting.
As this one and the one Balotelli shows.
Winning game 7s as the away team is hard, its even harder when you are a terrible team at 6-5 and the opposing team gets a ton of puck luck along with some terrible decisions being made.

Wasn’t Boston up 3 games to none on the Flyers, and up 3-0 in game 7? That’s the standard bearer

The Blues didn't choke, they got beat. They took the President's Trophy team into double OT in game 7.
They again have a team that can compete, let's see what they do with it.

This isn't a top choke in sports history. It might be on the mount rushmore for STL sports, but it's not even the number 1 choke in Blues history. I wasn't very old for the 96 game but I remember watching it. It felt like a what the F just happened moment. Last night was totally predictable if you had been watching the whole season. At about 4 minutes left I accepted for some reason that the game was going to OT. I don't know why, but I did. When the first one went in at 1:55 you could just tell there was just enough time left.
Truthfully the only bummer about not moving on, is you wanted to see if Snuggs, Kyrou, Bolduc, broberg etc could lay their stamp on a series. Kyrou better have been playing hurt. His effort seemed pretty low tier. Snuggs got figured out and couldn't create like he was at the start of the series. Bolduc got to engaged in the chippiness and didn't figure out how to balance his game. And broberg got better as the series went. I had no expectations for this team to get out of round 1 let alone round 2. But, it would have been fun to see these guys keep pushing and maybe just maybe the possibility of a Hollywood return. Even if they got bounced in 4, the experience would have been worth it.
Now what we hope is that a moment like this doesn't linger around a young team. If it does, there will need to be shake ups in the lineup. But we won't know that info until next year.

I disagree on Kyrou, but otherwise this is a great take. Same as you, the 96 series was a little bit before my time, but certainly have heard my older brother and dad talk about it. The 6 on 5 woes for this team were there all season long, and when that first one went in with almost 2 mins left, I really believed the game was going to OT. And frankly, the result shouldn't surprise anyone. Blues were playing defense the last 30 minutes, maybe more. Tough to turn it around and start playing for the win.callitwhatyouwant wrote: ↑05 May 2025 10:15 am This isn't a top choke in sports history. With as good as the Jets were all season, they were a hobbled team in the playoffs. A lot of their top players missed time (so did Holloway, to be fair). If the Blues had won, would anyone have really expected them to beat Dallas? The Blues offense is young and learning. The defense is a work in progress - 3 good players and a few dudes playing out the back 9. A lot of young, promising players still coming. I'm excited for the team.

^ 100% this. I imagine what it must be like to be a Nashville fan where your team goes out and spends a bunch of money in the offseason and then goes absolutely nowhere. Now there's a bunch of old guys on long, expensive contracts stuck on your team, whereas the Blues took the best team in the regular season to the brink with a bunch of scrappy young players.

Re: Where does this rank in the top chokes in sports history?
They choked in the final minutes of a 3-1 lead in Game 7, that was proven by the person who posted the Blues led the league in the number of 6on5 goals against. That is the textbook definition of choking, the inability to hold leads.
The Jets were NOT better than us and if that's the myth going forward then you're lying to yourself. Blues grossly outplayed them at home, they outplayed them Game 1 and Game 7 the entire 1st period of each game, held them for the 2nd period of each game, then gagged both times in the 3rd not because they got beat, they choked, they dialed it back, they got burned, and that is something that happened ALOT during the regular season. Again, can't fire another coach so you gotta move some players because this is now a culture, a culture of choking. That's usually lack of leadership, lack of commitment.
Re: Where does this rank in the top chokes in sports history?
It's not a choke by any means. But I don't get the attitude some have that they're happy they took the #1 team as far as they did. Wasn't it just 5 years the Blues came out of nowhere and won it all? Besides all the regular season is a ticket to get you into the playoffs, especially for hockey and baseball. Too many times the top seeds especially in hockey get knocked out of the playoffs. Blues controlled most of that series and were the better team. Last night showed it for 58 minutes.
