"... around Van Impe ..."

Post by bud white »

When I was just a lad and getting into hockey, I thought his name was Aroun Van Impe... since there were so many French Canadian players.

Poor Eddie had a tough night:

Ed Van Impe - one of the legendary Broad Street Bullies - has passed away at 84.

(Van Impe) achieved a bit of notoriety during an exhibition game between the Flyers and the Soviet Red Army team at the Spectrum in Philadelphia on Jan. 11, 1976.

During the first period, Van Impe elbowed Red Army star forward Valeri Kharlamov in the head. When no penalty was called on the play, the Soviets famously left the ice before returning after a 17-minute delay.

"He basically ran into my elbow with his head," Van Impe said of the play years later in the book, "Walking Together Forever." "I've always said I just couldn't understand how a world-class player would have wanted to do such a thing."

Several decades ago Bob Plager explained how Red Berenson was able to get that six pack on ice at The Spectrum in Season Two.

The prior season, the Flyers beat the Blues 8 straight times, then lost to St. Louis in a thrilling 7-game playoff series. The Flyers' thugs targeted Red Berenson with numerous slashes and crushing hits, which gave the Blues' lesser forwards more space.

During Season Two's preseason the Blues played the Flyers, and the Plagers and Noel Picard took turns reminding Ed Van Impe that he would pay dearly physically if he so much as touched Berenson....who suddenly found open ice when they faced Philly Nov. 7, with Ed Van Impe on ice for six goals in the 8-0 Blues rout.

Listen to Dan Kelly's six Berenson goal calls, and you'd swear Van Impe's first name was Around or By.
