Hot Stove hockey talk
I was reading an article that says Chicago may not wish to win the lottery this year for the overall pick stating it would be too hard to pass on Matthew Schaefer when they need to surround Bedard with top flight offensive talent. I was wondering if we could trade for the pick if they won. I figure it's the equivalent of three first round picks. So we offer, this years first, Jiricek and Dvo. Are we overpaying or is that enough to get a deal done. I know that Dvo and Bedard are both centers, but who knows for sure how it will shake out. I realize we've anointed Dvo with 2C status, so we'd have to find a replacement. It would be nice to have a franchise defenseman in the pipeline. Maybe Jiricek is, but who knows if he's that guy.

No chance. The window is opening...........and the D looks better by the day with some of those contracts coming off the books sooner than later (possibly by trade).

That trade would have about the same odds of being accepted as when we offered 3 1sts and then 2 1sts and Jackman in 2007 for the 1st overall (Kane). Not happening.
If only they had taken Demidov at 2nd overall last year instead of Levshunov then they wouldn’t have this “problem”.
In the end, I hope they move down as much as they can in the lottery. The Hawks are already building a juggernaut young core over there and they’re about to get another very good piece.
Draft lottery will take place on Monday.

No the number 1 over all is not going to help us in next 2 years. DVO is ready now and is our future #2 center.hockey jedi wrote: ↑29 Apr 2025 22:37 pm I was reading an article that says Chicago may not wish to win the lottery this year for the overall pick stating it would be too hard to pass on Matthew Schaefer when they need to surround Bedard with top flight offensive talent. Re: Hot Stove hockey talk
Would you rather have a player talked about as the next Dennis Potvin OR
a solid scoring center prospect + a big maybe prospect on defense + 19th pick in a weakish draft?
The Hawks see tons of Jiricek because he plays for the team that has their prospects Lardis and Vanacker. They are aware of Jiricek's issues

Juggernaut. I’ll believe it when I see it. Wasn’t Detroit also supposed to be contending for Cups by now? At least that’s what we were told a few years ago.STL fan in MN wrote: ↑30 Apr 2025 09:35 am That trade would have about the same odds of being accepted as when we offered 3 1sts and then 2 1sts and Jackman in 2007 for the 1st overall (Kane). I’d say no. Detroit didn’t get the top picks Chicago did.netboy65 wrote: ↑30 Apr 2025 09:52 amJuggernaut. I’ll believe it when I see it. Wasn’t Detroit also supposed to be contending for Cups by now? I didn’t say anything regarding the Blues. But it’s silly to not recognize the reality of what Chicago is building. Could it implode? Sure? Do I think they should’ve taken Demidov over Levshunov a year ago? Yeah, but Lev is still really good.
But if folks want to talk why a full tear down will likely work there but likely wouldn’t work here, Blues fans aren’t going to like it. It’s because more players will waive their NTCs for the Hawks and be willing to sign there as UFA there than here. I think STL as a city is underrated but there’s no doubt Chicago will have an easier time making trades and signing free agents once they want to, to supplement the young core they’re building.

Schaefer is NHL ready right now. He’s a legit franchise dman and he’s far better than any d prospects we have.Nublues69 wrote: ↑30 Apr 2025 09:39 amNo the number 1 over all is not going to help us in next 2 years. He might play one more year of junior but he would definitely be in the opening night lineup in October 2026 without a doubt.
With that said, it would cost a lot to make a deal to get the #1 overall no matter who wins the lottery.
Re: Hot Stove hockey talk
I honestly don’t think the Blues could afford a full tear down nor do I think ownership would have the patience. Hopefully now it’s a moot point, at least for several years.STL fan in MN wrote: ↑30 Apr 2025 13:17 pmI’d say no. There’s a chance everything does work out for Chi but also a chance it doesn’t, so I’m not penciling it in as a given

Re: Hot Stove hockey talk
I would agree. The Blues quite literally can’t afford it. This franchise was in serious trouble circa 2005, 2006 when they completely bottomed out. The Hawks however can pretty easily withstand that and financially be fine. It’s a perk of being a big city and Original 6 team. It’s a benefit many other teams just don’t have and it allows them to make riskier roster management decisions.netboy65 wrote: ↑30 Apr 2025 15:48 pmI honestly don’t think the Blues could afford a full tear down nor do I think ownership would have the patience. And I’ll acknowledge there’s a chance they screw it up. But they absolutely already have the assets in place to build a Cup winner. But nothing is guaranteed as we’ve seen in Edmonton, Buffalo etc. But those franchises made a few big key errors. And don’t have some of the benefits Chicago has (EDM and BUF just aren’t really prime destinations for players, Chicago is). And unfortunately, I don’t think Kyle Davidson is a moron. Don’t think he’s a super genius either but he seems to have the right patience and temperament to build a winner. I guess we’ll see though.
