Sinners
It's 'Crossroads' (the Ralph Macchio one - not the Britney Spears one) meets 'From Dusk Till Dawn'. Enjoyed this take on the vampire film from Black Panther director, Ryan Coogler. Set in 1930s Mississippi, story involves WWI veterans and twins, played by Michael B Jordan, who escape/leave behind Chicago gang warfare to open a juke joint in the delta region of the south. Story adds some elements of musical mysticism (there's a cool scene where the musicality of one of the characters invokes some imagery from the past and future) to help elevate the genre. Film is shot beautifully, plenty of blood and gore to satisfy the horror fans, and the cast is solid - Jordan is able to pull off playing twins - giving each brother enough individualism to set them apart.
Side note: there's some interesting memes floating around about how Buffalo Bills QB Josh Allen would react to a certain scene involving his IRL wife Hailee Steinfeld and MIchael B. Jordan.

From Dusk Til Dawn, indeed. There's nothing wrong with this movie that turning it off halfway through wouldn't fix.

Coogler deserves credit for the incredible use of music, particularly that "Power of Music" scene. That's a big swing--if it's not great, then it's stupid and corny. And it's truly great. I'm not going to see a better movie moment this year.
But let's keep this under wraps. That would not have moved me nearly like it did if I'd known it was coming.

Re: Sinners
The trailer in the theater pretty much sold me on "Sinners"...it seems to be just dripping with southern gothic grand guignol atmosphere. That's why I loved "Hush, Hush, Sweet Charlotte"; "Eve's Bayou"; "Midnight In the Garden of Good and Evil", and "Angel Heart". I'll give this one a shot. I just hope Michael B. Jordan's dual role comes off more believable and less distracting than Robert DeNiro's in "Alto Knights".

I would just add how very off the rails it got at the end there, in a massive showdown that with any sort of internal logic would have been over in less than 30 seconds. And I'm pretty sure I saw a couple randos get taken out when the only survivors at that point were the 6 main characters... really weird editing/directing choices.
Also I have not seen Miles Caton (Sammie) getting near the credit he deserves. Not only did he hold it down fairly well in his first acting gig as a 20yo, but his incredible bass voice gave me chills on 3 separate occasions. Terrific soundtrack and I'll definitely be checking out his real world music

The more I think about it, the more it depresses me. If Coogler wanted to make a period revenge movie where some Black gangsters kill the Klan, why not just make that movie?3dender wrote: ↑26 Apr 2025 23:31 pmTotally agree with all of this.Dicktar2023 wrote: ↑23 Apr 2025 21:10 pm From Dusk Til Dawn, indeed. Why not? Because these days, if you want to make a film for more than $10 mil that isn't based on an IP, it has to be a horror movie. By now, that rule is probably printed on a plaque outside of every major movie studio.
Except of course, Netflix and Amazon.

Re: Sinners
I was talking about the vampire showdown but yeah the Klan coda was almost as clumsy. Felt like a reference to the original Night of the Living Dead, but way more out of place.Dicktar2023 wrote: ↑27 Apr 2025 16:31 pmThe more I think about it, the more it depresses me. I think Coogler is a capable director but he's a few ideas and a lot of discipline short of the top tier, up to this point in his career at least. He wanted this one to be about too many different things, and it defintely feels like a mishmash.

In some entertainment gossip columns they're stirring up clickbait over Buffalo Bills superstar QB Josh Allen supposedly stewing over his fiance Hailee Steinfeld's steamy scenes with Michael B. Jordan.
Omigod...I just realized I mentioned the NFL. Been nice knowin' y'all.

Michael B. Jordan identifies as a Christian, having grown up in the church. In an interview with Essence Magazine, Jordan said, “I’ve always been the person to ask, ‘Why, why, why? Where’s the proof?’ I’ve always believed in a higher power, something bigger than myself. I think you would be foolish to not feel that way.”

See if you can make any sense out of that...

Whatever may be Jordan's defects (we all have 'em), being a Scinto is not one of them. Apparently. Say that because, nowadays, celebrity Scintos have permission to lie about not being Scintos. The head xenu, and the drone class know as 'actors' themselves, know it's not a 'good look'.
