I know it's a different era but some of his trades were amazing. McGuire is just the beginning. Edmonds, Rolen, Renteria, etc. Aging Clark and Walker as well as a young Wainwright. Others I'll remember once I post this. Pretty sure Chris C. was signed under his watch.

He fleeced the A's for McGwire, Angels for Edmonds, and Phillies for Rolen. The 7 yr, 105mm contract for Pujols was a steal. The signing of an injured Carpenter, trading for Wainwright. He had a great run.

things after he was fired but over the years when I've heard him interviewed he's never taken a shot at the Cardinals. Always a gentleman.

Walt was the best GM the Cards have had in the past 50 seasons! He truly was a superstar GM!

His ability to recruit championship caliber team leadership was remarkable - LaRussa, Duncan, McKay etc

His networking was remarkable for adding quality talent was exceptional! Renteria, McGwire, Carpenter, Rolen, Edmonds, Kile, Veres Stottlemyer, Henke, Smith, Clark, King, Kline, Wainwright and many more! Pujols, Molina and how many others thru the system. What a run!!

What I appreciated about Walt Jocketty was his commitment. His hiring of LaRussa was a perfect extension of that. We had season after season after season being convinced that the organization was committed to excellent on field results. You can look up the comments they had about "winning" the wildcard spot. They didn't just want bigger prizes; they worked for bigger prizes. They wouldn't allow the players to celebrate when they clinched a playoff spot, they had to wait until they clinched the division title.
Saying and doing, putting their money where their mouth is. He didn't have word-salad press conferences and interviews where he was trying to convince everyone he was trying. It was evident he was really doing the thing. I never wondered if they were trying to win the division or if they would call the season a success if they won the division and got bounced. He was a good talent evaluator. He was able to tolerate and glean value from dissenting voices. We (the fans) have seen excellence up close, and over time. We will not be satisfied with pretenders. Is it any wonder the stadium is empty?
