Cyrano's bread pudding

Post by abuxb »

We had dinner last night at Cyrano's and, of course, had their bread pudding for dessert. It has always been our standard by which all other bread puddings are judged. We couldn't believe that they changed it. Instead of the light, fluffy brioche that made the dish so wonderful, was a heavier bread much like other places serve. While the sauce was still good, it was no longer the outstanding dish it had been. Cyrano's please bring back your wonderful brioche based bread pudding.

I passed along your observations to one of the owners (I'm a former partner), who tells me that the neither the recipe nor the bread (Companion's brioche) has changed, but she will look into the matter.

It definitely had changed last night (Feb 22). Maybe they had run out of brioche.

Thanks for mentioning Cyrano's, reminding me they're still around. Nothing could ever replace the original location on DeMun off Clayton Road, of course, but that menu is one of a kind. I miss my Cleopatras and Cherries Jubilee. What I really miss is the girl across the table in the soft candlelight all those times, but life carries on, even 52 years later. I'll be in St. Louis this spring or early summer, so I'll add it to my visit list.

Then, wouldn't ya know it...I was in St. Louis last week for a funeral, and the post-burial lunch was at Llewelyn's in Webster Groves, so I passed right by Cyrano's on the way there, yet didn't stop in. (forehead slap)

Despite working all those years in the dining biz, I'd never had, nor really heard of, bread pudding....until my date after a Cubs-Cardinals game ordered it for dessert after a terrific meal in Wrigleyville in 2002; was the place called Twist? I recall a knockout garlicky potato salad.

The sample we shared of her bread pudding made wonder what I'd been missing all those years. Geez, I can just imagine what Cyrano's can do with it.
