Mikolas - keep doing well for trade bait!

Post by ClassicO »

It’s too much to expect him to do well for too long, but just well enough to get rid of him (eating some salary), for anything really.

Fedde ($7.5M), Miko ($17.7M), Nado ($27M net, but $22M and $15M net in ‘26-27)and Helsley ($8.5M) all need to be moved.

All but Nado are FAs next year and won’t be resigned in the new plan so trade deadline ought to be interesting.

But sadly CO Mikolas has got that NTC and I doubt he'd waive it. :x

I was thinking the Braves too given proximity to Jupiter and (should be) a contender.

My biggest fear?

As a huge middle finger to the fan base Mo gives him a one year extension! 8O

If I read this correctly his no trade deal expired in 2023. It doesn't appear he currently has a no trade deal as part of his contract.

I thought he might be a 10-5 player but he has only a little over eight years service according to Fangraphs. So I suppose it's money that is the biggest obstacle to a trade.

Good catch. This seems to verify that the new contract doesn't have one but the previous one did.

Money. Turns 37 in August. Hasn't pitched very good in 3 years. Those are obstacles. Maybe in late July someone would take him for a couple months but I don't see the Cardinals getting much in return. No disrespect to Mikolas. He played a role in a few postseason Cardinals teams. It would be a salary dump and who replaces him? Rush a youngster like they did with Liberatore?

No he has a full NTC SM.

I hear this frustration frequently and I understand this as well. But Mikolas has a full no-trade clause and Matz never really had much of a market.

What contender is going to sign Mikolas? How would signing possibly the worst starting pitcher in the league make a contender a better ball club? He's most likely a Cardinal until his contract is up. Then retirement? I would think so...

Someone should ask Woo to explain why Cot's says the no trade clause wasn't included in the most recent contract.

Good question. Possibly a team with injuries to starting pitchers who needs a guy who will take the ball every 5th game. It's unlikely but not completely implausible.

I think the confusion comes from the original 2020-2023 contract extension S.M.

The new two year extension was added to the final year (2023) of that deal and the NTC came along w/it until it expires.

I asked A.I., it also listed Mikolas:

The St. Louis Cardinals have four players with full no-trade clauses: Nolan Arenado, Sonny Gray, Willson Contreras, and Miles Mikolas. These clauses mean they have the final say on any trade involving them.

My thoughts are that I could not care less about the team saving money on any of those soon to be FA's

The second thought is what do you really expect in return? very little is my thought and most important who are the SP's besides
McGreevy to take Miles spot will? the line is short. Miles might have as much value to those prospects in ensuring a controlled
timeline od development as any money placed in Bills wallet.

Matz, Fedde, maybe Gray if he waves his NTC to me are the chips. IF even one is dealt you probably have a use for Miles.
Be nice, we can all name a use for Miles.

Meanwhile

https://redbirdrants.com/the-cardinals- ... de-embargo
With Spring Training almost a month away, the Cardinals only have themselves to blame for a lack of trades, as their contract negotiations with previous free agents have made them victims of their own trade embargo. Three Cardinals starters have full no-trade clauses in their contracts, meaning that they can reject any accepted trades in order to stay with the team.
