GDT: Blues at Jets 6:30 CBC, TVAS2, ESPN2, FDSNMW

Post by hotrivets »

Notes from nhl.com:

The St. Louis Blues want to make sure they don’t repeat the same mistakes in Game 2 of the Western Conference First Round at Canada Life Centre on Monday.

“You’re up 3-2 with 10 minutes left in the third (period) and we didn’t prevail, so we’ve got to grow and learn from that,” Blues coach Jim Montgomery said Sunday on the morning after a 5-3 loss in the best-of-7 series opener.

St. Louis played its style of hockey through the first two periods Saturday. The Blues were forechecking, playing well on special teams and held a one-goal lead with 20 minutes remaining.

The Blues were outshot 9-2 in the third.

As for wresting momentum away from the Jets once they get it, something the Blues were unable to do in the third Saturday, Neighbours said there are things they can do better in Game 2.

“I think just trying to get the puck down in their end and sustain it,” Neighbours said. “Yesterday in the third period, they did take over the game.

“The biggest thing I noticed from us is we weren’t getting to our forecheck, stalling pucks and creating [offensive]-zone time. When you’re dumping a lot of pucks in and they’re retrieving them, breaking out easy, they’re playing with it on their stick and that gives them confidence, gets them feeling good. Trying to get in the [offensive] zone, create some sustained offense, doing that will slow their momentum down a little bit.”

“There’s a lot to take away,” Blues defenseman Cam Fowler said. “It’s always fun coming in, playing in an environment like that. The energy was great, and it was a competitive hockey game: physical, everything you’d expect from playoff hockey.

“We were right there the whole time, and they capitalized on a couple of opportunities in the third period, and that’s the difference in the game. Our guys fought hard and have to make sure we prepare and be ready for the next one.”

The pressure of being down 1-0 in the series probably won’t bother the Blues; they were eight points out of a playoff spot heading into the 4 Nations Face-Off on Feb. 12 and an NHL-best 19-4-3 after the tournament.

But there’s no disputing they let a good opportunity slip away Saturday and they don’t want that to happen again.

“There are certain tactical things we can look at that can help us for the next game and just understanding that in order to have success in the playoffs, you have to sustain that momentum for 60 minutes, especially when you’re on the road and you’re playing against a really good team in a difficult environment,” Fowler said.

60 minutes for certain. Need to be ready to battle as long as it takes, 2-3 OTs or more if necessary.

From Korac:

What may have seemed more uncharacteristic was the veteran defensive unit would probably admit it didn't play as well as it has in recent months, more so with breaking pucks out and being able to withstand the Jets' pressure, something that group has handled well that fueled a 19-4-3 run from the 4 Nations Face-Off break.

"Yes, you would love to take advantage of that opportunity, but there's ebbs and flows to every series, every game, and we were right there the whole time, and a couple opportunities late, they capitalized on so those things are going to happen," Blues defenseman Cam Fowler said. "We just need to regroup and make sure that we take a look at the film and understand what happened, and then come back ready to go tomorrow night.

The Blues are going to have to be better against Jets top-line players Mark Scheifele and Kyle Connor in particular, along with linemate Alex Iafallo. Each scored a goal, and Scheifele and Connor each had two assists to combine for seven points going against the Robert Thomas line with Pavel Buchnevich and Jake Neighbours.

"I liked Thomas’ line offensively," Montgomery said. "I think defensively we’ve got to be a little sharper and a little quicker.

Reading the Jets board..
......
I am absolutely enthralled to bestow my unwavering support upon these illustrious Jets of Winnipeg.

Their valour upon the ice commands nothing less than the highest admiration, and I shall cheer for their triumphs with the fervour befitting a loyal subject of such noble pursuits.

Or, as the commonfolk say,

Go Jets Go!

My name is kanadalainen, and I'm addicted to almonds and water I approve of the preceding missive.

(This message paid for by the Rosenort and District River-Wideners Club)

Away with you little Jets, fly to the proximal locations of the most egregious villans on the Blues (their foot-launching captain) and the dankest places on the ice, and commence the sundry and methodical destruction of the Blues' swinefest.
.........

When I have seen by Bin's glove hand defaced
And baby Schenn’s haggard and time-crusted impotent rage;
When crumbling Blues towers I see down-razed
And their busted (bleep) gives rise to old Monty’s all-pervasive age;
When I have seen our hungry fanbase gain
Advantage on the kingdom of “goals for”,
And the firm soil win of the frozen water main,
Pummel’d goals quelling loss and goals well stored;
When I have seen such interchange of state,
Or Thomas himself confounded to decay;
Ruin hath taught me thus to ruminate,
That Arny hath come for playoffs here to stay.
This thought is as a drawn breath, sweet, bemused
Wield Helly for this fight, which we must not lose.

Correction, they make themselves sound like THEY are right out of Idiocracy as they woefully try to make themselves sound like Shakespere while attempting to wax poetic (badly at that).

I hope that's just in writing. Snuggy is a natural RW and I thought Buch was a natural LW. I questioned putting Snuggy on his offside in a playoff environment on the 2nd line. I know most teams play F1 F2 F3 and does it really matter but still.....
I also don't get why they have Boldy stapled to the 3rd line. If anything I'd drop Neighbors down and try Boldy at LW on the second line. His speed and skill set seems like it would be a better match with Kyrou than Neighbors.

The Chemistry between Kyle Connor and Mark Scheifele is something else. We have to figure out a way to shut them down.
We have to match or surpass the hitting of the likes of Barron and Lowry. My keys to series.

Keep the faith--Go Blues. Let's find a way to win tonight!

Thanks for that.
Those guys fund public education well, it appears. We could learn a LOT about that. Looks like a mashup of Kipling's "If" and Shelley's "Ozymandias" to me. I applaud the effort.

I agree on all points.

With Monty' comment about the Thomas line being good on offense, but needing improvement i=on the defensive side, putting a 10 NHL Game "veteran" on that line is spooky, crazy, and perhaps genius.

Boldy on the second line is a decent choice. It keeps two speedy offensive threat lines and gives you two solid checking lines.

Jets fans are great as a group. That river wideners club was hilarious

the poem looks like AI tho. for example I can ask AI to generate me a song in the style of whomever so I picked Bruce Springsteen:

"Game Seven Heart"
In the style of Bruce Springsteen

Well the ice was burnin’ under northern lights,
Game Seven breathin’ like a beast in the night,
And I watched our boys lace up in that quiet St. Lou',
Old ghosts hummin’ in the rafters, hummin’ somethin’ true.

Parayko held the line with a blue-steel stare,
Like the river runnin’ deep, he was always there.
Schenn dropped his gloves and he gritted his teeth,
Born with a lunch-pail heart beatin’ underneath.

Young Snuggy’s got a shot like a freight train's cry,
Barely wet behind the ears, but man he aims high.
Robert Thomas sees the ice like a holy flame,
Threadin’ needles through the chaos, never plays it the same.

They said Hellebuyck’s the wall, the crown, the stone,
But pressure’s a devil when you’re out there alone.
Connor flies, and Scheifele’s sharp as a thorn,
But you can’t measure heart by the hype you’re born.

And there’s Binner in the crease, calm as a prayer,
Like Owens in Berlin, man, he silenced the air.
He’d been down that road where the world bets against,
And he turned every doubt to a barbed-wire fence.

Dylan Holloway's on the shelf, hurt but near,
You could feel his fire from the bench, loud and clear.
The city leaned in, breath held, not a sound,
One more period to turn it all around.

Drivin’ past where Schmiezing’s used to be,
Talkin’ to the ghost of my old man next to me.
He said, “Son, you don’t get nights like this too much—
Hold on tight, these ones don’t keep in touch.”

And we rose with ‘em, just us and the moon,
Hearts bangin’ like fists on a backroom saloon.
When that final horn cried, I swear I could see
A little kid in me high-fivin’ history.

So here’s to the vets and the wild-eyed kids,
To the ones no one saw, but we always did.
In the silence after, I swear I knew—
That dream was stitched in Blue and true.

Monty’s stubbornness on this may prove costly. The line of Neighbours-Schenn-Kyrou was tried down the stretch and was awful. Two plodders just slow down Kyrou. I also think Snuggs gets eaten alive by the Jets top line. Bolduc banishment to 3rd line, even with his dumb penalty, is confusing. If they want to load up, fine, take your chances with:
