I suspect Goldy's underperformance the last 2 seasons, like Arenado's, had more to do with the organization's level of disfunction than it did with real physical decline. I believe the loss of Yadi so dismantled particularly the pitching system, as well as leaving a huge void in leadership, led to both of them maybe losing hope, which got in their heads, and led to their dismal showings.

I think they also both just needed at least one of the two of them to perform, which would have helped the other perform, just cause it works that way. The chemistry wasn't optimal. I said it then, and, I'll say it again, even if I'm later proven wrong, that talent like the level both Goldy and Arenado have, doesn't just fall off a cliff, barring injury. It happens, always, eventually, but, not overnight, gradually, over a 2 to 4 year period, IMO.

I wanted the Cardinals to sign Goldschmidt to a 2-3 year extension, and, although I understand why they didn't, I feel it's a shame a great player like him won't get to retire a Cardinal.

Was he not on the equivalent of a one year contract last season?

No. He was in the last season of a multi-year contract.

Now that he's experienced an season that set his value nowhere close to the last year of his Cards contract, it could be he's hellbent on producing the entire season to get another contract or better contract for next year.

Goldy is nothing more than a complimentary player. He does best when he can stay in the shadows of true stars. He did it in 2022 when AP did his farewell tour and now with Judge. Wait til the big limelight games...
