In addition to two openings on the coaching staff, #Mizzou men's basketball is also looking to hire the program's first general manager.

Was listening to one of the programs on College Sports radio yesterday, and they were saying that no, college general managers hired so far are under the head coach...basically like another assistant coach, unlike professional GMs. (Several schools have already done so.) But every school will be different, and there are still questions, like will the GM have the final say on who is paid what from the portal? Will the GM take over primary high school recruit vetting? So far, it seems the GM is the guy who will juggle the money and make the deals with portal players, and share in contacting and vetting potential transfers.

Yeah, this is not new, though having a GM is new for Missouri.

The answer of who is over who is a simple one.

Follow the money.

Gates runs the program. But there's too many moving parts in the present landscape to oversee everything given the time involved.

An administrator if you will can free up more time for Gates to continue and establish relationships with existing players/recruits and just as important help in their on court development as well as a myriad of other things such as hiring a new assistant coach/recruiter.

If I'm not mistaken Belichick the new football coach at North Carolina has a GM and I guarantee you it isn't the GM running the program there.

I guess every place is different but last month, Stanford football GM Andrew Luck fired their head football coach. I'm sure Luck wasn't operating independently and had the AD on his side.

From what I read he was fired for "alleged mistreatment of female staffers".

The coach has claimed no wrongdoing.

The AD runs the overall athletic program. This be an administrative function who is not a coach but business side and free HC to actually coach and recruit players.

Yeah, so sentence had been passed and Luck may have just been the executioner.

But it has nothing to do with on field operations or recruiting it was a personal conduct matter.

The coach can't be an objective party in that decision.

Duke hired a GM 3 years ago. Her job, primarily, is assisting players with NIL opportunities. 60 Minutes did a profile on her and it seemed she was more of a mother hen, making sure players kept appointments and obligations.
