Come on Marmol
This cardinal team has alot of players with real speed but Marmol is very reluctant to let the try to steal. He is a base to base not an agressive manager.
If one of your advantages is you have more speed than the other team then try to exploit it and try to steal more bases.
This offense has done well most games and can even be better if Marmol will steal and bunt for hits more.

It’s always been true, as a player, you can’t play scared! It is also true that you can’t manage a team that way either! But that’s what Oli does. It’s not his fault really, he was put in this position to just be a yes man to MO’s wishes, and he’s afraid to mess up very much, so he just plays it the safest way he can.

He manages scared like his boss Mo gm's the cardinals. In Mo's case I can understand why he is scared to make anymore deals because of some of his awful free agent signings and some terrible trades he has made.
Still on opening day a cardinals broadcaster says Mo is a sure cardinal hall of famer. Jocketty was ten times the better gm than Mo will ever be.
Re: Come on Marmol
Giving away one of your last 6 outs trying to bunt was the worst move of the game imo.
Re: Come on Marmol
I don't consider the Cardinals as a 'fast team overall . Three players jump out as speedsters .. Scott II Winn and Siani ( and Siani is a reserve bench guy)
Noot, Donovan Walker run well but I don't put them in speedster category . Nado, Contreras, and catchers are slow by MLB standards.
That is just my opionon of Cardinals team speed. In our division Cubs, Brewers, and Reds have much more speed than Cardinals.

Re: Come on Marmol
I dislike more having free swinging GIDP threats in the 2 hole like Burleson, Contreras and Baker.
Against RH SP's, I wouldn't be afraid to have Scott LO with Nootbaar in the 2 hole and Donovan 3rd. That'd give Scott plenty of SB opportunities when he gets on with the patient Noot behind him. I'd consider Donovan our best hitter now, so having him hit 3rd works.
Will Winn's back issues flare up more if you run him more often? IDK, but I want him on the field as much as possible.
Scott CF
Noot LF
Donovan 2B
Arenado 3B
Contreras 1B
Gorman DH
Walker RF
Catchers
Winn SS
Scott may be our only player really capable of putting up big SB numbers at high efficiency. Cards have plenty of base cloggers, don't hit them ahead of VS11.

Re: Come on Marmol
The SP last night was throwing high 90s and pretty quick to the plate. Scott wasn't playing. Not sure who you'd want attempting steals against that.

DH baseball. Teams no longer hit and run, steal, advance the runner etc. Station to station baseball.
Boring.

Re: Come on Marmol
It doesn't have to be a straight steal. It would be really simple to start the runner and have it been a run and hit situation. Perhaps, if we would try this once in a while, we would not hit into five double plays in one game! The runner doesn't have to be a speedster. Just put the ball in play and see what happens for once instead of watching double play after double play.

Been saying almost since his hire that Oli does nothing to create offense.
And it doesn't have to be the speed guys, you can hit & run w/any baserunner yet I haven't seen him use it more than a handful of times during his (soon to be done) tenure.
Bad Manager, can't wait for him to be gone at seasons end.

Re: Come on Marmol
I'm not any big Marmol hater or nitpick on him for things the way others do, but there are two things he does that I call awful on
1. Allowing Wilson Contreras to DH in the top part of the lineup - BAD
2. Giving Ryan Fernandez quality innings in relief and not kicking his butt outta here - AWFUL
If those two things were fixed he'd get manager of the year award from me

Re: Come on Marmol
Of course I am not advocating they try too steal against every pitcher you have to use common knowledge of the pitchers and catchers.
I also am not advocating that most players are speedsters on this team but they have a fair number that have better than average speed.

Re: Come on Marmol
I would like to see Marmol be more aggressive on the bases, but I don't think any of us can deny that the bats have been better than we all thought they would be. I have to consider the other side of the coin, what if we WERE more aggressive on the bases, and ran into some outs in situations where we did get a rally going.

Re: Come on Marmol
I love seeing Scott drop some bunts. I hope oli eases the reigns and let's guys like Scott, Winn, and Nootbaar steal a few bases. This team could have success with some small ball added in.
Re: Come on Marmol
Yes, a lot more exciting watching guys K in those situations and not risk hitting into a DP.
And that sacrifice fly [nonsense], glad that [shirt] is gone as well. Don't want to see anyone get injured advancing bases at anything other than a leisurely stroll. Station to station that's how we do it. Slow and steady wins the. Not sure what it wins. But it's great watching nowadays.
Re: Come on Marmol
I understand and love fundamental baseball as much or more than any knowledgeable fan. But there's a time in a close game that, imo, bunting is a bad play. If it is succesful, your best result is a man on first. We needed 1 run to tie. A man on second with a double would be a better play. But thanks for the opportunity to explain the finer points to you.Dazepster wrote: ↑16 Apr 2025 21:13 pmYes, a lot more exciting watching guys K in those situations and not risk hitting into a DP.
