Perhaps they got the idea from Arthur Conan Doyle. His Sherlock Holmes short story, The Red-headed League, concerns the theft of gold from a London bank by tunneling into the bank from the basement of a nearby store. The same story was also the inspiration for the 1971 Baker Street robbery in which a Lloyd's bank in London was tunneled into from a shop 40 meters away.

Rififi (1955) one of the finest heist movies ever made and unquestionably the greatest heist movie that's difficult to access.
This is the film people don't know they need to see.
Jules Dassin was a master. The heist scene in Rififi is exquisite. Exquisite.
