John Tudor is the last pitcher to throw 10 shutouts in a season and I'm not convinced another pitcher will ever throw as many as 10 in their entire career!

Bob Gibson would have punched Oli out if he came to the mound signaling to bullpen.
Then gone into Mo demanding to be traded to a team that will let him finish games.

I agree with you, however I’m curious, in this day and age, what team is that?

I have a hunch that you could find a team if he was pitching like 1968 .. 1.12 ERA. Mo would have the phone ringing off the hook.

Fair enough. Like you, I’d like to believe someone out there would let him dominate.

No pitcher since 1968 ( 56 years in 2024) has ever done better than Gibson .. One difference though is that the mound was lowered in height (by 6 inches ) after 1968 so that changes things. Pitchers were throwing more downhill in 1968 and prior.

My concern in this is that I’m guessing he’d be earning a fortune and everyone in the organization would be screaming about protecting their investment. They wouldn’t see any sense in possibly “burning him out.” It’s a different mindset today.

Case in point, Blake Snell: So far he's pocketed $110 million and he's committed to receiving another $115 with the Dodgers. He's started 213 career games so far...and completed ONE.

And when he pitched that one CG last season he was treated like Cal Ripken Jr..

Compare this to Warren Spahn, who hurled more than 75 complete games, including 4x around batting orders featuring Willie Mays, Gil Hodges, Jackie Robinson, Stan Musial, Frank Robinson, Richie Ashburn, Ernie Banks, Duke Snider, Ted Kluszewski, Roberto Clemente, et al ....after turning forty.

Prior to turning 40, he threw 300 more.

I think Mr. Gibson won 7 consecutive World Series games and they were all complete games.

You're comparing apples to nuclear physics. If Gibson or Spahn's arm fell off and laid on the ground till the end of the game, the owners would have been out $50,000 or maybe $100000. End of story. If Snell's arm falls off, his heirs will be collecting money for generations.

Yeah, these teams think the arm is going to fall off . It sure is a different mindset today. Most of the top pitchers did just fine pitching 9 innings .
Check this out ... Gibson in 1968 started 34 games . of those he completed 28 of them with 13 of those shutouts .. with a 1.12 ERA He had 268 strikeouts Most fans are shocked that he lost 9 games that year .. Imagine allowing 1.12 runs per game and losing 9 of your 32 starts .. His record was 22-9 Guess you can imagine he had losses of 1-0 , etc. when facing another ace like a Sandy Koufax, Don Drysdale , Juan Marichal etc.

Another Wow stat is that Bob Gibson had a streak of 47 consecutive scoreless innings from June 2- June 26 THink of that .. that is more than 5 games of 9 innings each without allowing a run scored ! That streak was in the midst of a 15 game winning streak. Gibbs also had a 99 inning stretch that year allowing a total of 3 runs ! (99 is equivalent to 11 full games ).
Oh BTW he won a Gold Glove for fielding that year . From 1965-1973 , he won 9 Gold Gloves ! Great athlete.. Harlem Globetrotters wanted him for their basketball team.
Bob hit a HR too in the 1968 World Series ! His career batting avg. was .206 24 HR's and 144 RBI We have position players struggling to hit .206 lol

Gibson won both Cy Young Award AND MVP too !

I was 20 years old for that 1968 season so watched something I have never seen duplicated since that year .. a 1.12 ERA
So you can imagine how I feel now and then watching a Cardinal starter throwing shutout ball for 6 maybe 7 innings.. then he gets pulled and watch the set up man and /or closer blow the game in 8th or 9th . It's tough to watch !

And several posters on CT would be screaming to trade the overpriced prima donna the first time he gave up more the 2 runs and didn't complete the game. And, oh boy, the firestorm on here if he ever had the temerity to speak his mind!

I’m surprised - that’s there’s even 1 so far. Was it a rain-shortened game?

I love these silly threads. If Gibson pitched today he also would not be completing games. The team would not allow it, period. He would be paid $30 million a year and that investment would be protected. I believe pitchers want to pitch more innings but you do what the team wants.

Waino says hello with 28 CG -three times leading the league and 11 shutouts -twice leading the league.

Is anybody listening?
