Nico Iamaleava demands $4M…Tennessee says goodbye
Glad to see Huepel and Tennessee stand their ground as if they caved the wild west of college athletics would be even crazier. Interesting that upon hearing the news Iowa QB Sullivan immediately reached out to Tennessee and entered the portal himself last night.

This is just another example of why I mentioned in another thread that making heads or tails out of the present player movement landscape makes building a program almost impossible for a coach.
Players are here today gone tomorrow.

Good for Tennessee. The ESPN article said Nico and reps reached out to Oregon earlier this week before sitting out practice and Oregon said “no thanks”.
I’m sure he stills ends up at a big school but I bet Nico gets closer to his current NIL deal than the 4M he wants.
At some point for these blue chip guys they have to realize the real goal should be the NFL and the 9 figure contracts they can hand out, rather than milking every last dollar out of your school or jumping into the portal every year. Throwing yourself into total uncertainty when you could be a year away from the NFL over a million dollars, silliness.

Given the popularity of college sports among so many members of congress, I wouldn't be surprised to see several of the major conferences join together and petition for a law exempting them from anti-trust action, a la major league baseball. Once that happens they'll be able to set NIL caps and restrict movement within the super conference. You want to back out of your NIL contrac, fine. Enjoy SEMO.

Steps in the process and the long game should be the goal not the quick buck.

No one asks about player academic eligibility anymore. Time to stop the nonsense about 'college ball'. It's pro ball now. Time for a pro setup.

That is when the players unionize and simply sit out as a team and hold whole conferences hostage. This will happen. They players can simply dictate that they want 50% or more of the TV revenue and make 10x what they make today.edwin drood wrote: ↑12 Apr 2025 15:11 pm Given the popularity of college sports among so many members of congress, I wouldn't be surprised to see several of the major conferences join together and petition for a law exempting them from anti-trust action, a la major league baseball. If you're not getting any NIL $, what's the incentive to join a union? Still plenty of guys on scholarship, more than enough to put on games. If you're 3rd string QB and decide to join the union and strike, your scholarship is pulled and you can come up with $30,000 to stay in school or go home.rezero wrote: ↑13 Apr 2025 00:38 amThat is when the players unionize and simply sit out as a team and hold whole conferences hostage. There are two main reasons. First is that players today are still getting is a tiny piece of the pie. Schools have athletic department revenues that range from $150-$350M yet are only shelling out 10%. Revenue sport athletes could easily get 50%. One article stated that is all of the athletes at Texas would unionize and sit out a year, even a school as wealthy as Texas would be crippled financially due to the enormous debt schools are carrying these days due to stadium enhancements, etc… Second, it most players NIL money is insignificant, so the majority could carry the union vote. Sure you lose you scholarship for a year, but the next year you make $300k instead of a $30k scholarship. This is no longer the amateur game we used to love as these are now professional sport clubs that are loosely linked to schools.edwin drood wrote: ↑13 Apr 2025 09:15 amIf you're not getting any NIL $, what's the incentive to join a union? This person must follow his ex wife on Facebook, just so he can go to his page and tell everyone how many mistakes she's making in her new life. This is no longer the amateur game we used to love as these are now professional sport clubs that are loosely linked to schools.
Re: Nico Iamaleava demands $4M…Tennessee says goodbye
lol….”ex wife”? Fail. Some people are too naive to see how college sports are transitioning into a second tier pro sports league. There will be phases during the process, but in general nobody can deny or limit a persons earning potential so in the end the players have all the power. We have just scratched the surface of what is going to happen.winonsports wrote: ↑13 Apr 2025 10:05 amThis person must follow his ex wife on Facebook, just so he can go to his page and tell everyone how many mistakes she's making in her new life. This is no longer the amateur game we used to love as these are now professional sport clubs that are loosely linked to schools.

Nico was with a great offensive coach that could mold his talent for a great NFL career but GREED came in . IF the awash in money Ducks didn't want him good luck.
I admire Josh even more now. he could have came up with the money

Something needs to be done to return some sanity to college sports.

We lost nearly 15 million last year after supplying educational aid (scholarships, room and board) that accounted for 8% of the departments budget. I’m curious how you suggest paying athletes 50% of the revenue without bankrupting the AD?
