Will Pallante be a Cardinal Ace, or a league Ace.
Good morning.
Has has several good games before this year. Currently, 2-0, tied for fifth. 2.20 era-23rd., 1.04 whip-28th.
16.1 innings, 10 hits 4 runs 4 ER 2 HR 7 BB 13 K.
His issue is walks. Almost one wvery two innings. A pitch to contact ground ball machine.
Can he be league level, or Cardinal level Ace.
Thoughts.

Can he pitch 180 innings with a 1.05 whip and a 4/1 SO/walk ratio or better

Neither
Solid #3, perhaps upside to #2 if he has another good 2025 but never will be a "league" Ace.
And as long as S. Gray's here, then he's the Cardinals "Ace".

I think more of a 3 but he’s spent a lot of time in the lab to get there, so kudos to him for working for it.sikeston bulldog2 wrote: ↑12 Apr 2025 11:54 am Good morning.

He doesn’t look like a guy with strong enough command or bat missing ability to profile higher than that, but he’s also still young enough to continue to develop his stuff.
I think the team needs 2-3 better than him to be competing for flags.

Projected at 200 innings. Current 1.04 whip- needs to lower BB. No his Bb/K is about 1:2.imadangman wrote: ↑12 Apr 2025 12:07 pm Can he pitch 180 innings with a 1.05 whip and a 4/1 SO/walk ratio or better

Wake me when he does it for a year. I never see him being an Ace...he will pitch very good games and not very good games.

Well written. Remember he has thrown several good to great games before this season. I think he is a day away from greatness. An Old Friend wrote: ↑12 Apr 2025 12:09 pmI think more of a 3 but he’s spent a lot of time in the lab to get there, so kudos to him for working for it.sikeston bulldog2 wrote: ↑12 Apr 2025 11:54 am Good morning.

Prior to this year he has several good starts. The ability is there spread out over several years.scoutyjones2 wrote: ↑12 Apr 2025 12:13 pm Wake me when he does it for a year. I never see him being an Ace...he will pitch very good games and not very good games.

Re: Will Pallante be a Cardinal Ace, or a league Ace.
That's my statistical rubric of an ace. But for future planning purposes I think what a contending rotation really needs is like 3 starters who can combine for a 1.20 whip or so over 500-550 innings. Cards have a lot of intriguing young arms. There's also a lot of innings to cover.sikeston bulldog2 wrote: ↑12 Apr 2025 12:12 pmProjected at 200 innings. Current 1.04 whip- needs to lower BB. Re: Will Pallante be a Cardinal Ace, or a league Ace.
Pallante has pitched more consistently than both Gray and Fedde and he's the first to give us 7 innings...shutout to boot. I'd say he'll be fine as our #3 and may well gravitate to #2 by next year. Those 7 innings were versus the Phillies, one of the 2 best hitting teams we've faced.

As you mention two better hitting teams, the other Boston where he gave up only four hits. The three BB did him in.hugeCardfan wrote: ↑12 Apr 2025 12:20 pmPallante has pitched more consistently than both Gray and Fedde and he's the first to give us 7 innings...shutout to boot. BABIP of .182… benefiting from some good fortune, the expected average on his fastball is near .300 but actual is only like .175hugeCardfan wrote: ↑12 Apr 2025 12:20 pmPallante has pitched more consistently than both Gray and Fedde and he's the first to give us 7 innings...shutout to boot. Small samples are noisy but can be accurate to several other degrees. You’d think in small samples ratios and standard deviations would still show clean correlations. An Old Friend wrote: ↑12 Apr 2025 12:49 pmBABIP of .182… benefiting from some good fortune, the expected average on his fastball is near .300 but actual is only like .175hugeCardfan wrote: ↑12 Apr 2025 12:20 pmPallante has pitched more consistently than both Gray and Fedde and he's the first to give us 7 innings...shutout to boot. Ball four ... aka .. Strike three
Mikolas hasn't been great ... but that pitch call didn't help.

No pitcher has the ability to suppress average on balls in play to that degree.sikeston bulldog2 wrote: ↑12 Apr 2025 12:51 pmSmall samples are noisy but can be accurate to several other degrees.
