Extra Inning Strap
What is the proper strategy in extra innings? With man on second and first batter up I see more teams play for the hit vs. bunting runner over. They are playing for more than one run. What is the correct thing to do?
Secondly are their any stats showing putting runner on second is saving time?
I’m really not liking the extra inning changes. Frankly I would just rather end in a tie.

Re: Extra Inning Strap
We have scored four times in an extra inning. Not good. So I say a bunt here or there is warranted. The bigger issue is not stealing second base during the first nine innings.Jatalk wrote: ↑11 Apr 2025 08:55 am What is the proper strategy in extra innings? It should depend on who’s at the plate.
Re: Extra Inning Strap
If you are the road team, I think you just have to play it like normal. Let three dudes try to drive him in. If the first guy hits a deep fly or ground ball to the right great, but I play for one. Now if you are the home team and the visitors don't score in the top of the innings, maybe you think about moving the guy over.
This rule is stupid, as are all "just get the game over with" overtime rules in all sports.

Being home or road team plays into it.

Whoever knows it, please inform Packy Elkins. He clearly has no idea.

Not suresikeston bulldog2 wrote: ↑11 Apr 2025 09:36 amThey say it plays into it. I wonder if you moved the runner over every single inning, what the record would be.

^^THIS^^
For instance the other day there's NO WAY you allow M. Winn (first batter up w/ghost runner at 2nd) to hit, he BUNTS him to third.
Same w/Pages, Sinai and Saggesse if they're in the lineup.
The rest hit away but some like VSII, Gorman and Burleson should be pulling the ball to the right side, Walker going that way too.
That way if the do make an out, then it's a productive one moving the runner to 3rd.

This! You are controlling the game to some degree & not letting the game control you. I don't know what the Expected Runs are for an inning with runner on 2nd and 0 out, but I'll bet it's close to 1.rockondlouie wrote: ↑11 Apr 2025 11:37 am^^THIS^^

As far as saving time, I remember when they first started doing it in the minors, two teams played 9 extra innings. It may be more exciting than 9 innings of shutout baseball, but I wonder about the time savings as well.

I know a runner at 3rd and less than 2 outs is just under 50-50 he's going to score.jw0595 wrote: ↑11 Apr 2025 21:00 pmThis! Re: Extra Inning Strap
In the first three years of the ghostrunner, games decided in the 10th inning jumped from 43.9% to 69.1%. The average extra-inning game dropped from 11.25 innings to 10.40. No extra inning game has gone beyond 16 innings since 2020.
Re: Extra Inning Strap
I'd still prefer the ghost runner not be put in play until the 11th or 12th inning.
