It has been fun watching VS2 get off to great start, but Donnie's very quietly had a killer start to the season. Holy cow! Only K'd 4 times in 43 ABs and .395 BA with 10 RBIs. He doesn't hit many dingers, but he has been driving in runs. Of course he and VS2 are going to come down to earth, but Donnie's sure a big piece of this team. Hope he stays healthy. Always liked the guy, but geez, what a good start.

Indeed. Edman is a better defender, but Donovan is more than adequate at several positions and is the better hitter. Yes, I know he won a GG as a utility guy, but Edman is the better infielder. If they only could keep one I would have picked Donnie as well. If this team had decent pitching they would be OK. Maybe they will DFA Mikolas and one of the kids will step up. A couple of decent BP pieces would help too....

A glue guy that you don't consider getting rid of until(when & if) he prices himself out of town. He is locked in through 2028 and will be 31 going on 32 at that time.

Unselfish player that you can write in for 110+ OPS+, 2+ WAR, .350+ OBP every year.

Just so I'm clear on what you're asking... you're asking why teams should consider signing their good young players to longer deals to retain them past their arbitration years?

And if that IS your question, I'd ask you why you're against that... and especially considering we know that ownership is resetting the payroll baseline to a lower number.

The Cardinals have ZERO young players signed through their arbitration years. Knowing their stated payroll strategy, how on earth could you suggest they shouldn't lock up players they've developed longer term before they get close to free agency?

It's not about 3 games. Way to miss the point... can't tell if it was intentional or not, feels like it wasn't based on your extremely short-sighted defense of your position.

I agree. No need to sign Donovan early. Just that he is off to a good start. He will end up around .280 and if we are lucky his OPS will be in the 800's. He is certainly not going to maintain an OPS north of 1.000 where he is now. Depending on his slot in the order, he will knock in 70-80 runs and play good D wherever he is needed. He is not Pujols.....but a good guy to have in the lineup and off to a great start.

Donovan should’ve been signed to a longer deal 1-2 years ago.

I don’t know of any injury concerns with him. What are they? Also don’t know the “Hurdy” reference.
